MK2 Front Motor mount??
March 31, 2017 08:23AM
Hey guys, I'm wondering what you guys are using for a front motor mount on an MK2. I have an ABA swap in mine, and found that the stock MK2 Mount was too soft. The crank pulley would hit the frame rail on hard shifts. I am currently using the hockey puck bent bolt hack job motor mount, but I'd like to do use a proper front motor mount. There's a lot of misinformation about using a Corrado or Passat front crossmember and then using an MK3 style Mount but I can't get a straight answer from the damn Internet. Please advise. Thank you very much!

What gearbox are you using, 020 or 02A / J?

If 020 you could try to find an early mk2 front mount as per pic in this thread. captive design.
These are probably pretty rare these days but it's easy enough to make up something similar with a bit of simple fabrication work and a welder by modifying the later type.

Early mk2 mount filled with durethane.

That being said, I did take the rally hammer to the frame rail to make more room in case something breaks/moves, which it eventually did.

Although these early mk2 mounts are known to be pretty stout, mine did crack and eventually failed. Be sure to pull it apart from time to time to inspect.

Guys, some of the Golfie boys over on the "Look at my Kewl STuff" Facepoop page have been yakkinmg about the limitations of that format on the one hand and the fucked up VW mounts nobody ever REALLY definitively fixed --for 30 gawddamn years.

So William Merenich in particular listened to my suggestion that the only place where Golves were really popular---and where people drive harder and faster was Sweden so he's been rootiong arouind there and has fouund some bitchiner than hell photos cause I keep saying that a REAL cure is probably somewhat like any other REAL mounting set up...and it turns out it is..

Now I think Merenich can post up the photos...But the point is this:
You fawkin galoots need to sit down and decide collectively if you guys want to keep fucking around with cheezy shit that breaks? Or get together enough and do collective action to get some stuff made in a sensible series---and since I'm the guy been involved in manufacturing or production my who life I'm saying a minimum run of about 15 cars worth...

I'm talking a group effort...but GOOD stuff you can weld in and essentially forget.
You Golf guys are as bad as fawkin Xratty guys or Volvo guys..herdin' cats..
But you need somebody with background in manufacturing and process engineering (empirical) , who does this shit... But mounts and a serious, critical look at the ass-sploding CV BS..
Gotta fix those issues.

Whaddya think? Wanna fix some stupid problems or talk about onesey half assed bullshit another 30 years?

Thanks for the info guys. Yeah I am still running an 020. I had never heard about the early MK2 mounts before. However, if they only came on early Golfs there's no chance in hell I will find one up here anymore. They are super rare.

I only beat a little bit of the shit out of my car, so I don't need the absolute strongest mounts possible. However, it wouldn't be a bad idea. I mostly use it as a daily hack around and do a few rallycross events. But right now the car shakes so much with that hockey puck Mount that when (if) I hear a bad noise I can't determine what it is until something actually breaks or falls off. And my dentures keep getting rattled out....

So you hockey pucked the front. Did you do anything to the other mounts? Or are they just stock mounts with 180k on them?

John is right, if we all want continue on this golventure we need to come up with a better fix for the mounts.

FWIW: I have a non-hydraulic modern-ish mk2 front mount and oem ABA rear mount, both filled to the brim with urethane. I think i put the rear mount in a big coffee/soup can and filled it... I run and 02A and put a new mount on that. It's ok, much better than old stock but nothing special. The motor doesn't move much and its not hitting anything when I shift. The car gets abused. The urethane is still holding after many years, miles and hours of rallying. Your results may vary.

Yeah sorry I'm running an MK3 K frame with new oem transmission and rear engine mounts.

how much vibration does it ad when you fill the moints with urethane? If it was a 100% #racecar I wouldn't care but because I drive it a lot as a daily it's kind of concerned

I don't really have a reference point so its hard to say. Its stiffer than stock but not nearly as stiff as solid mounts. The urethane mix is cheap so it might be worth a shot.

I'm surprised the pulley would hit the frame with new oem mounts. You might want to check that everything is tight, straight and not already broken?

John, I would be interested to see some of these pics of how they have solved the problem so to speak. What would a manufactured solution, like you described, look like?

Yeah there were 2 options for oem mk2 front mounts. I think I bought the 16v mount thinking it would be stronger...??

Maybe I should buy the other and see what it's about

**I ordered the non-hydrolic mount. German Auto parts says that the hydrolic mount is the heavy duty mount. Hmm.

I'll call Merenich and see if he can post a bunch of them...He's the right age group and can probably do it in like 2 clicks..

wait

This is so simple it's pitiful... Looks like a sideways version of what I been making for N-S RWD cars for decades.
As I suspected--since Ford's FWD stuff looks like that way back 20 years ago.
