Duratec 2.3L to T5 or Type 9 box
February 14, 2006 09:55AM
So, with the new Group 2 rules, a Duratec 2.3L seems to make more sense to build due to cheaper parts, added displacement, and availability of engine. (03-06 Focus, other 2.3 Ford and Mazda products, have seen long blocks for sale starting from $300. 2.0 Duratec only available in 05-06 Focus.)

Here's a good read about the Duratec motors and links to bits at the bottom.
http://www.sbdev.co.uk/History_files/History_DuratecTuning.htm
Does say that the 2.3 is slightly more bore and much greater stroke than the 2.0, which is 97.6 bore and 83 mm stroke.

Type 9 bellhousing:
http://www.raceline.co.uk/duratecbell.htm
This company also sells a 45 DCOE intake manifold for 110 GBP.

These guys have some interesting shortblocks for sale.
http://www.marcymotorsport.com/html/focus/focus_2003-2006_2_3l.htm

Most US stuff I've seen is definitely aimed at the US, if I can't easily bolt it on it's too much work, whereas the UK stuff seems more race application. But, the one thing I have yet to find is a T5 bell housing adapter, which I'd like to find.

O1 and later Ranger have the 2,3 in a north/south application

BOTH have the identical bore, and the indentical compression height on the pistons: about 28.3mm
Other differences are easy:
2.3 has a TALLER block
2.3 has a crank with longer stroke AND 50mm rod journals 5.090 c-c
2,0 has shorter stroke with 47mm rods journals shorter c-c
BOTH have a rod/stroke ratio suitable for grocery getter or maybe turbo= 1.62
BOTH would want a longer rod if making a competition motor

Marcy is definately aimed at the "external bolt on street guys and when I talked to them we're typical "We've developed everything worth thinking about our drag race car with a blah blah blah" typical WAY TOO MUCH HYPE California BSers

The one on the Capri project was made right there in Colorado, but it lacked any kind of provision for release bearing except the annoying concentric type and no holes to access the release bearing/slave cylinder.

These thing absotoootly want rods and pistons and _should_ get longer rods and with a 28mm comp height that is pretty hard to accomodate things by going to shorter piston, that leaves only shorter stroke.
Hence the choice of the 2,0 crank in the 2,3 block and 6.125 rods or now one could choose 6.2 c-c rods.

The result would be a really optimal motor for pulling well past 8000 rpm, be very strong between 3500-7500.

Water piping ain't too rough using rwd applications.
Stock headgasket is Multi-layer-steel.
I have header flanges on the shelf already.

A steel flywheel could be done easily and could be set up for SAAB turbo 215mm pressure plate, which is what I used on the Capri project.

I wonder if a duratec would be legal in my volvo, since they are owned by ford. The Volvo needs a motor, so just looking at options.
Sorry for the threadjack.

Carillo makes rods. We got pistons from JE.

Cam blanks are available from Mazda.

Other good parts are pretty expensive...JV has sourced the good-but-economical way as he usually does. Goodonya John.

Over priced stuff from Cosworth (rods, intake manifold, T-body, pistons, etc.)

The Mazda6 has the biggest oil pump. Better than the Ranger/Mazda truck, Tribute/Escape, Mazda3, Focus, etc. They all have different pumps. Get the Mazda6 and change the spring.

Titan UK makes a nice low profile cast aluminum oil pan that allows a much lower engine mounting, but its too expensive and is made for use with the 2.0 oil pump (takes a lot of machining and custom pickup to work with the good pump).

Mazda3 head flows better than Mazda6. Ford heads vary. You want the one with the cross-hatched pattern cast into the sides of it.

Hey John,

Do you have a need for a flame cutter? Its a pattern cutter with a motorized magnetic head that traces a shape (flange) and has an acetylene cutting head on it. We used it to make all kinds of circle track and strange other header flanges over the years (like Fiat X19s and Maserati Bi-Turbos). Now it mostly just sits in the corner of the shop neglected.

Innerested? Just a shot in the dark...

WEY-ell... the S40 uses the same Euro Focus chassis as the Mazda3.

Is the 2.3 version used in the S40?

I don't have the rules tattooed to the inside of my eyelids, but IIRC they say something along the lines of "The engine block must have been sold in cars built by that make" (+- layweresque mumbojumbo)

Interestingly this means the old SOHC 2.3 and the SOHC 2.5 as well as the Duratec 2.3 would be legal for use in an RX-7, since all were used in Mazda-badged product (mostly "B2300" and "B2500" pickups) and you could make waaay more power with a Duratec 2.3 than you could with a stock port rotary. Plus the Duratec weighs a bunch less.

The crappy 2.3 Ford block and carb thingie Aaron has was traded from Ryan Oerter who ran the Ford 2.3 in Group 2 in an RX7. Now he has a turbo 2.3 in it that keep going boom. He started on fire right behind us a few months ago. Our driver had an extinguisher in hand and the fire out so quick that no damage was done and he fixed the problem and kept racing.

Let's make a list of what cars have Duratec motors, okay. 2.3L unless noted.

2005 Focus (2.0)
2001-on Rangers
Mazda 6 (all years?)
Mazda 3 (all years?)
Tribute/Escape 2005- has 2.3L
and ...

PS> New Burton catalog is out. Lots of good bits.

This place has direct to head throttle bodies for 495 GBP, which is pretty good.
http://www.duratecpower.co.uk/

This links you to local junkyards. Found about 5 ranging from $1000-2500 in Denver after a quick search. Could probably get for less if arrive with cash in hand.

Hey Grant- the place in the link about has long blocks for, I think, $600 new + freight. All from the Ranger. He's been advertizing on TF for a few years.

Actually he has no complete motors at all at the moment. Cosworth Racing just bought 32 to be the seed motors for their super nice all built up stuff they're offering in the nifty new catalog, and the cost of the quote "pretty sure nearly complete long blocks is closer to 850 or so but freight from the guy is super cheap. 125 delivered Deeetroit to Sleezattle.
All north south Ranger units.

It's been awhile since I've looked at one of his posts, he also might have been doing a TF only deal. A few guys over there have purchased them.

I'm not letting this die.
Here's info I just got from Gerry about 2.73 minutes ago (approximately.)

Hi Grant,

I am sold out of my mostly complete Ranger Duratec 2.3 engines. The engines below are sold only as a short-block assembly or component parts. If any of them have bonus parts such as cam sprockets, chains, oil or water pumps then I'll include those parts at no extra cost.

The price per one short block engine, a head with valves and springs, a cam cover, a timing cover and an oil pan is $700.dollars. Here is a list with individual prices:

Duratec Ranger 2.3 short block...$400.
Complete Ranger 2.3 head with cams...$300.
Bare Ranger 2.3 head (without cams)...$200.
Bare Ranger 2.3 engine block...$200.
Ranger 2.3 crankshaft...$300.
Valve/cam covers....$40.
Front timing cover...$40.
Duratec Ranger 2.3 oil pan...$40.

There is no trade in or a core charge. Transport from Detroit to Denver is approximately $250 per 500 pounds. A single crated engine weighs about 340 pounds. Many customers buy two or more engines to save overall shipping costs.

Thank you and regards,

Gerry Dedonis
