subaru rear sub frame

Well we are going to be mocking up a sub frame in the next week and hope to sell them soon.

Do you still have the Merkur floor pan? Figure out a way to make the tubular one work on a Merkur. Make both use the Toyotal Supra diff, then it's a easy, cheaper way to have a clutch type rear diff in a Subaru AND it allows a strong enough rear diff to run a Subaru RWD! Of course, the one unstated hard part is going to be the halfshafts. But a custom stub shaft to go through the Subaru outer, similar to the way the Merkur outer is, would allow use of something cool and common like the VW CVS that have a huge amount of articulation and you can get superbly stong CV internals and chomo shafts.

^^ ohhh...I like how that sounds. how cheap is cheap for a supra diff? And would the VW half shafts fit in suby rear hubs? I don't want to start swapping out hubs/knuckles and then probably brakes, etc, etc, etc...

You should take a look at the Prodrive Group A/WRC tubular crossmember and try to emulate that.


It uses a ginormous diff that makes the Supra diff look silly, BTW.

Dont you just need the case? Doesnt KAAZ make a LSD for that era supra? So... wouldnt an open diff case work?

Sure but part of the beauty of the Supra diff thing is the price.
Start talking KAAZ and the weeenie wilts real fast.
It IS a much sooooper bitchiner diff than the OEM Toyota one though.

Ya the WRC stuff is nice just try and populate the states with it, if someone
lands on one ill build them a custom sub frame for that diff other than that I
wouldn’t mind mocking a supra and stock diffs they don’t have to be limited’s you
can get all that fun stuff on line for the trucks that fits it will be around for
a long time and they are more than enough watch some of the drag supra guys there
mostly stock diffs. I do like the way the WRC has the two outpost I have a shell
to check that out with and make sure its where it needs to be if I can put those
in with the long stock diff.

I've got two Supra diffs, both cost about $60 and are clutch type stock.

The thing with my idea would require a custom stub shaft to be made to go into the Subaru rear uprights and would give a 6 X 108 bolt pattern that would then allow you to use the VW Type 4 CVs, which are 34 mm wide and have 22 degrees of articulation versus the Merkur stock of 18 and can be had super strong. I have something line 9" of travel in my rear with the stock shafts, so the T4 CVs would give a really good margin and allow good amounts of travel. I've talked with CVJ Axles about this idea and they said they've done similar things such as making custom stub shafts to go into the Ford 8.8 diff to use the same type of shafts so it's definitely do-able, for a price. There's also the fact that you're now Macpherson rear so have to do new towers to accomodate struts. But you have Subaru selection for rear brakes, bullet half shafts, fully adjustable rear suspension, and a bitching rear differential that has lots of options for ring and pinions, decent stock diff, and both Cusco and Kaaz make upgrades for.

Just looked though and neither 4.11 or 4.44 appear to be available for the Supra diff though so don't know if using that in the rear for an AWD Subaru would be wise, but you could have it for a decent RWD Suby. 3.54 is though, which I think was a Subaru final drive in the mid 90s.

I would think a VW rear beam would be a more profitable market though. The Subaru ones aren't that flimsy, whereas noone seems to keep the VW one straight. Would want to design it to fit with the stock tank.

Call randy's and see what ring and pinion you can use from toy trucks I’m fairly
sure they swap from each other?

if the pinion is the same and I assume so if that’s clear you have more ring and
pinion choices that any other manufacture! Toyota stock offered over 7 ratios
alone.
Also what’s the deal with older 911 cv that are the big deal in Baja would those
be an option?

The 930 CVs allow 24 degrees of angle and cool ones with chromo races lightened ala Ford WRC shafts are around $130-140 each and are 6 X 108 bolt pattern. The Type 4 are actually 6 X 100, but use M10 instead of M8 bolts, which that and the inner spline count is the difference between Type 4 and Type 2 (which is the same as Merkur).
