Front suspension for the PV
May 26, 2006 10:42PM
I'm starting to think about front suspension options for the PV.

I'm not keen on using the PV subframe, for starters it doesn't look very robust, will have to be converted to disc brakes and I'll need all new wearables.

I understand that all the volvo double a arm subframes (pv, 120, 1800, 140) can be used with relative ease. But having a steering rack would be nice instead of a box, so mustang II? Struts?

John V. what do you know what the common solution is in Sweden? I've seen at least a few converted to a macpherson style strut setup.

Thanks

Another "FWIW"...

Volvo Technical Driver recently had a reprint of an article on prepping an Amazon for rallying. I haven't found one for a PV specifically (but I'm still digging through nearly 40 years of Volvo Driver ...I'm up to 1978!), so take this with a grain of salt.

The part on the front suspension says:

"You may wish to strengthen the front chassis rails by making a triangular box to the bulkhead.

Strengthen the front chassis rail where the idle mounts on one side and the steering box on the other, 1/16th steel sheet should do on the rails and once done up, run a short weld to anchor the sheet.

Check that the hole in the front cross member that accepts the top shock absorber pin is not worn oval or enlarged or the metal is starting to "dish". If so, weld a heavy washer underneath and on top of the turret.

...

The best suspension set up we have come across is from Stein Johnson in Sweden, 4 springs (from a 142S, I believe) and 4 Bilstein shock absorbers do the trick. The spring pan in the lower wishbones needs a little easing with a grinder for the springs to fit. At the same time you need to strengthen the wishbone (1/8th. Steel strinp along the inside and on the outside, right up to the bottom ball joint mounting). The bottom wishbone also needs modification to take the bottom mounting of the front shock absorber which is also 142 type, but this is obvious once you see it."

This probably doesn't help and certainly doesn't answer your specific question, but it might be interesting to you anyway.

Thanks for the info, still don't know what I'll do. For now I've got my head out of my ass and am back to attacking the major task at hand. I've got most of the sound deadening tared paper out and some of the tar cleaned up.. and have been cutting out crappy old repairs here and there.

That's more than what I paid for mine.. although not much. But I'd imagine it's in about the same or worse condition. Grass is a silent killer.

Makes the RX-7 we're putting together look showroom fresh. Yikes!

Must start new thread for that one.
