Let's Talk: Switch Panels
December 06, 2010 04:05PM
Someone on the Galant board posted a picture of a WRC car and asked if anyone knew what all those buttons, switches and knobs did. I tried to give him an idea (differentials, bang-bang, fuel/oil/water/ignition, lights, et al), but I thought it would make an interesting topic to learn about.

For once, I'm not posing a question to be a belligerent non-conformist. grinning smiley

I'm curious - could you share some pictures of your switch panels and thoughts on why you set them up the way you did?

What's useful to have on a switch panel? What's not?
Got any tips to share on planning such a project?

Thanks!

There's a local Impreza with the light switches labeled "Little Bitches" and "Big Bitches". Laughed my ass off when I saw that...

Very cool. Thanks guys. Keep em comin'!

If you've got switches for the vent fan, I assume you've taken out the OEM controls. How did you handle the ducting in the dash?

Any pics?

i have a stock heater box in the car, I would never remove the stock stuff in a rally car myself. I just re-wired the system to eliminate extra components. No off, switch in center is low, down for medium, up for high. Xr has a really good box and duct system.

I will take 2 solid days, but well worth it!

I am currently destined to help Derik re-wire the M3, then I am helping John with his XR, then I could do yours. What is your time frame?

Yo Sean, sounds like you're busy! Cars all apart. Tonight I stripped the block. Tons to do... this could take a year!
It's just that random stuff doesn't work right. Wipers are super slow. Blower doesn't run. Starter doesn't run. And this is a pretty clean XR. Would love to clean it up so I can understand and service the electrics. Engine out is a good time to do this kinda stuff I think, but it can prolly wait to Feb. Simple stuff mostly I guess, but I've never done it!

I added a switch for the horn that is reachable by the co driver. Great for spectator areas.

The further i get into developing the car, the more switches i've got.

Thinking....

Starter switch, Acc power, Power on, DCCD power on, Outer Lights, Inner Lights

Boost hi/lo, Fuel Pump, Rally light trigger (highbeams vs always on).

DCCD lock, Datalog, ALS

Circuit Breakers for DCCD, and both lights.

Master Battery Switch

Also have a couple of gauges stuffed in there. Voltmeter, and Wideband O2.

And annoying as hell to videographers. winking smiley

What's the advantage of these circuit breakers you speak of John/Chris?

Speaking of breakers, anyone use these ATO fuse replacement breakers? http://www.jegs.com/p/JEGS/JEGS-Manual-Reset-Fuses-Breakers/758040/10002/-1

Looks like a cheap easy way to add a circuit breaker to an existing OEM circuit.

For me its quicker to reach over and punch a circuit breaker when tracking down annoying wiring problems rather than stopping trouble shooting, wandering aimlessly in my garage looking for fuses, get distracted by some shiney thing, remember i was 'spossed to put that thing back into that box and mark the box then put it up on the top shelf, then wander back to the car, realise I was 'spossed to have found "Electrical Department" and repeat above 3x.

So when I'm probing around with the "Pokey Light" (which is the single quickest way to troubleshoot LACK OF JUICE to ________________ in the field,) if I touch something hot it goes "click" I push the buttom in and keep on what I's 'spossed tos be doing: fixing wiring.
