I just have a stock one right now, and its on its way out. It likes to slip whenever i try to tug someone out, and it was looking a little thin when I put the engine in.
So, whats the hot ticket? I was thinking a 6 puck sprung hub thing from some place. Yeah? Any brands to stay away from? I've heard a lot of people unhappy with both the Centerforce dual friction (CFDF) as well as Spec clutches. I'm sure there are going to be all kinds of useful replies to this thread which will blow my mind, but I would suggest possibly calling up South Bend Clutch to talk with them about your needs and what they can do for you. Since I am from the non-turbo side of the DSM tracks, we can't just buy an ACT clutch off the shelf and these guys have built a reputation in my community for being honest guys who are genuinely interested in hearing what you need and why you need it before the suggest anything.

I'd go for a sprung center 4 puck clutch, maybe even a 3 puck No point to go for 6. AP Racing supplies a 4 puck for rip-snortin a' rootin an a tootin GpA Cosworths so why go more for a widdle bitty sorta-wabbit?? I use and reccoment Clutch net and have supplied such famous VW drivers as Derek Bottle. Worked good for him. I get my clutches from clutchnet.com even though they are Russian, they take their business very serious and their clutches never failed under my abuse. I use a sprung pressure plate and 6 puck. I had some problems with 3 aqnd 4 plucks so I used straight logic, with a 3 puck, you get one rivet failiure, you lose 33%, 4 puck 25%, 6 puck 17%. As far as bite is concerned 4 puck and 6 puck are very similar. Contact surfaces are almost identical. If you have a less than perfect flywheel surface the 4 puck will flex less.

FWIW I got a Clutchnet full ring type clutch (I agree they are very nice guys too). I asked about using a puck style for my Subaru (stock WRX 2.0l Turbo engine) and that is what they recommended. Igor (the boss man I think) had said that a client had used a puck for the same type of application and found it a little harsh. I guess I'll find out when I eventually get this godforsaken car finished!

I'm thinking I may just go with the 4 pucker, it'll sound more hardcore when I pull up at the street races, is cheaper, and will be lotsa better than stock. I just hope I dont have to line up against any excels with ignition modz at the lights. Thanks for the advice, guys. But Johnny, the 4 puck and the 6 puck i have only have >3% difference on contact surface area. But I am comparing 2 clutches from 2 different manufacturers, I knew there was a reason why I kept the 4 puck that disintegrated, now I can throw it in the garbage.

The impression I got was that it was a bit too much on or off, so yes the engagement. That would also make it a bitch to drive on the street too. And since a harsh engagement bet stress the weak ol' Subaru trans I went with the full ring. Moosie, that's what my 16 month old daughter thinks of your comparing two different brands. Now you forced me to go and actually measure a Clutch-Net puck you pucker. All things like pressure plate, being equal AP Racing says you get about 30% more torque capacity. So cars with really horrible junk release mechanisms like pre 71 Beetles and my old Saab V4, they chatter till your teeth fall out, but thats a release brg with no guide sleeve. > > > > Nick Taylor.
