I see what you are saying I was thinking of the huge void there
that gos up the side and pop the exhaust out the side of the car
not under it. where the tank is do two 180s and do muffler and
cat side by side and weld them together and stick it out the side.

Its not a big deal yet and there might be enough room anyway.

Turbo cars get by with just a cat usually anyway.

There is room for a second tunnel under the seats in a focus. The focus has such a high dashboard and tall green house that you really have to mount the seats way way up off the floor to be able to see out the windshield.

You should also be able to get by with just a cat on the Focus. It will be loud but should fit under the noise rules for the different sanctioning bodies.

I am really thinking about using a m50d r1 tranny from a ranger it
will save about 1000 bucks and its way stronger than the miata.
The gear ratios are not the best but its a fine sacrifice. The only other
problem is the shifter is shallow so I will have to make a crazy shifter.

Throw in wife, kids, running addiction/racing all over the place, sailboat, flying for a living etc etc and this is why my merkur is just now getting a cage after... well, several years! Not enough time in the day.
William, you do good work, and you don't have all those other issues! Thanks for working on my car... if you're able to get a realistic Focus setup then that would quite possibly be my next one. I bet there are a good number ot other rallyistas that agree. Enough to keep you busy for more than a couple of years.

Ok went to the junk yard and made a killing This is just more proof that
owning a focus for this set up will pay off and save tons of money and
head aches with parts that do brake like motors and body parts. We know body parts are cheap and I have been saying motors where cheap, hears the proof
1 motor $250 39000 miles 2006 2.0 with 90 days
2 transmissions from 2001+ rangers $150 plus $50 core ea.

One trans will be getting cut and milled and fixed to use the t5 and
we will be lost foam casting them.

the other trans will be going in too my car its an m5od its plenty strong
with bad wide ratios but its cheap and it bolts right up spline and all.
I also think a 4.0 gear kit will fit the box they are good enough ratios
for a turbo car.

M5OD-R1 3.72 2.20 1.50 1.00 0.79 (2.3L, 3.0L Engines)
M5OD-R1 3.40 2.05 1.31 1.00 0.79 (4.0L Engine)

will keep posted lots of work like Jason's car!

Me too, could use another 100hp and lower gearing as well...

Just musing a bit, a Mk II escort is roughly 2000lbs, what can we realistically expect to get a caged Focus down to?

My focus is about 26 or 2700. It will take a lot, but there is a lot of glass to be removed and fiber hatches availible... still. It, like the BMW MINI is bigger/heavier then it looks.

the days of 2000 lbs are gone but I bet I can get 2400 with windows and some fiberglass.

Wining the lotto is not what i want people to think if they really want a new age
RWD terror I know over the next years I will get some people in to a rwd focus
that repairs are a snap and out performs most anything they have owned before.

side note on motor stuff. Me and jvl have been in agreement on 4 banger they can
do everything you need for most cars under 2700 lbs.

But we always get talking about duratec and there v6 and they guy up north that
has 2 cosworth v6's

so hear is the info off wiki to save some time, the main reason i bring it up, is
another option would not hurt to the growing list. The main reason this sweet
dohc v6 is projected to be in 20% of fords line up ranging from 230hp to almost
400hp in stock forms.

One thing i do want to know is what is its bell housing it looks like the 4 banger?

Also called Duratec 35
Duratec 37
Mazda MZI
EcoBoost
Production 2006–present
Predecessor Ford Mondeo V6
Displacement 213 CID (3496 cc)
227 CID (3721 cc)
Cylinder bore 3.64 in (92.5 mm)
3.76 in (95.5 mm)
Piston stroke 3.41 in (86.7 mm)
Cylinder block alloy Aluminum
Cylinder head alloy Aluminum
Valvetrain DOHC with Direct Acting Mechanical Buckets

Duratec 35

The Duratec 35 displaces 3.5 L (3496 cc, 213 CID) with a 92.5 mm (3.64 in) bore and 86.7 mm (3.41 in) stroke. Due to packaging differences (primarily the relocation of the water pump to the valley), the 3.5 L engine will fit into any engine bay the smaller Mondeo 3.0 L will, and replaced it in some applications (notably the Ford Taurus) in the 2008 model year. Production began in 2006 for the Ford Edge, Lincoln MKX, and Lincoln MKZ. Ford expects the engine to be available in 20% of its vehicles by the end of the decade.

Official SAE certified engine output is 265 hp (198 kW) and 250 lb·ft (339 N·m) on 87 octane gas. This is a substantial upgrade in power from the Duratec 30 and bested all comparable 87 octane rated V6 engines at the time of its launch.[2] For 2011, the 3.5 L received Ti-VCT, helping to boost output to 285 hp (213 kW) and 253 lb·ft (343 N·m).[3]

The engine is assembled at Lima Engine in Lima, Ohio, with expansion planned in Cleveland Engine Plant #1.

The Duratec 35 was on the Ward's 10 Best Engines list for 2007.
The 3.5 L Duratec 35 installed in a 2007 Lincoln MKZ

Duratec 37

The Duratec 37 is a 3.7 L (3721 cc/227 CID) version of the Cyclone V6 intended to power heavier or premium vehicles. The Duratec 37's additional displacement comes from an increase in bore diameter to 95.5 mm (3.76 in), stroke remains identical to the Duratec 35s at 86.7 mm (3.41 in).

A Hiroshima, Japan assembled Mazda MZI 3.7 was installed in the 2008 Mazda CX-9 and was the first 3.7 L Cyclone V6 to see production. The first Duratec 37 saw production in the 2009 Lincoln MKS.

A few days before the 2009 Los Angeles International Auto Show, Ford unveiled a new version of the Duratec 37 for the 2011 Mustang, making it the first Duratec-badged V6 since the Lincoln LS to be used in a production rear-wheel drive car. This version of the 3.7 L features Twin Independent Variable Cam Timing (Ti-VCT); delivers 31 mpg-US (7.6 L/100 km; 37 mpg-imp) highway mileage in the Mustang, and was the first production engine to deliver in excess of 300 hp (224 kW) and 30 MPG.[4]
