but is doing a solid axle really any simpler? Yes it's a simpler beast, it's a stick with wheels on it, but the act of mounting it to the car is more complicated then i think Will is shooting for. If we haven't gathered by all of his previous stuff Will likes to make stuff simple. Sure, if you want to 4 link a focus, nothings stopping you, but I'm thinking he's more working from the angle of something someone could buy and for the most part bolt in. Yes, you may need to trim some of the spare tire well, but who can't do that. I don't think most people could set up a proper 4 link and make sure it works right. God knows I couldn't, that's why i gave up that dream of a making one on my own. I'll just wait till i can afford it and have it done. I'm not ashamed to admit to that.
to the nay sayers, I'm sure there were plenty of people in the way way back that said the escort would make a crap rally car, it's just a little shit box econo car. Well you will never know until you try it. Press on Will, if i could afford it, I would be right there taking up that guys offer of the free focus. I think it's a great idea, and thinking out side of the box is what it should be about. "Rally racing makes a heroin addiction look like a vague craving for something salty" |

I know but I can make a near bolt in set up there is no room for a beam axle to go up and then you would have to fab link box or some really funking trailing arm off the original mounts. I have no beef with a beefie beam axle. I plan on having a toyota axle in my capri. |

Christ on the cross, if William has shown one thing really well its he can make good strong simple mounting systems.....
You boys forget that the whole stinkin axle needs room to move in a solid axle car, and that the propshaft is waving around in some big arc? IRS the diff sits there in the same place. Probably makes for less carving up of the floor, and that equals EASIER. come on, guys this isn't that hard. the hard thing is getting parts that are 'right-sized": big enough so they're reliable-er than hell, common enough so they're not toooooo pricey, and they don't force too much custom "wear" items. Solid axle has a whole lot going for it, but if you want that, why not just get a 240 Volvo? I would hope you of all people would understand the want for a more modern car, since you brought up that point yourself in a previous post. By making an affordable, sustainable, based on a modern car, RWD platform, William will bring something to market that is not there. The 240 is awesome, and I will build one someday, but the argument for the next easily available modern shell is a good one. I am a RWD guy, always will be. For me it is the most natural and enjoyable driving style. |

IF you want solid axle NOW, then. Common way to make a conditional statement...If this, then...that. Sure there's plenty of 240s in all but the NE 1/4 of the country.. But they're crushing them faster than we're wrecking them. What to do in 3 years? 5 years? and the other half of all the good rwd cars are roting in the ground!
theres focus shells that are too rotten to use. How many cars have been sourced hear because there are no Volvo's xr's or corolla's that are not total garbage elsewhere. Im tired of the why and how, I have all that. Its down to cash, time and details. o Sean do you have any links to a mini air box. The tunnel has to be fixed no mater what I tried stuffing my t5 in there and its right on the tunnel and I think its a touch too low. so, for the truck box a simple remote shifter will work fine this is neat but needs to be a lot longer. and when I can fix the air box we are set. http://www.mustangsplus.com/tech/speedshifter/index.html Edited 1 time(s). fuck ya I was thinking if this frame and shit works out well I want to use
this blue car as a cheap rental, I want to do the frames in this car and then throw it in to my silver car and you can drive that. My car runs well and there is no extra work to do to make sure the motor will work. |

My whole thing with the modern car is avoiding the fiasco of doing a shit ton of fabrication to get it how I want it. Stitch, reinforce, cage, bolt on. Basically like a WRX build. No cutting, slicing, fitting, fabricating, etc. That was my thoughts on the modern vs old car thing. To get AWAY from things like this. Through building my car the biggest thing I've learned is not to do everything under the sun. How many years have I missed? And for what? Having a "proper" rally car? LOADS of people run corollas with the stock 4 link setup. Sure, the 4 link is better, but it can be rallied without it. I should have just stitched, reinforced, caged it. Shoulda bought the AP brake kit from the Irish escort place (can't think of the name right now), probably stuck with Johns suspension for burlyness, or possibly even just get the bilstein uprated dampers and stuck those on the stock setup, and put some slightly warmer cams in, but able to use the stock ECU. But no, I listened to the idea of building the perfect car, and it ought to be damn close to perfect when its done... but at what cost? All that time? That's what I mean by a modern car. The ability to not need to do a bunch of shit to it. |

What car is that you speak of? new shit dose not mean good or easy shit, means available this project is for the econo box rwd crowd. Also is there a more bare bones car than the focus it still comes with hand crank windows manual locks non abs no frills. This will never be a subaru or 240sx but it fill a pocket for some hard core enthusiast that see the vision and will utilize it that by the time the build is done they will save money and have spare parts to boot. You can turn any project in to a huge ordeal I know what its like, I have put a few cars together but not mine! |
