help needed removing rear XR seats
August 25, 2006 04:50PM
Started stripping my XR today. Got the center torx fittings out of the rear seats, but can't see how they're fixed on the outside edge. Can anyone let me know how to get these out?

Cheers! John

[runs to the garage, finds shop manual behind dormant rally shell perpetual project...hey JV, you gonna send those front suspenders? 2.25" spring setup please!]

OK, seat cushion is pretty straightforward...remove screws from side hinges (along the dropoff on floorboards to rear footwells), then slide each side outward from the center pivot. For the seat backs, pull the carpeting off the back of the seats, then remove screws on hinges. Pull seats, then you can yank the side hinges off (more torx stuff, it looks like).

I think that should do it! Just what sort of evil are you planning? Going group 5? Or a rally-x terror?

Andrew,
Thanks for checking that for me! :-) I'll be back at it this afternoon.

It'll be some sort of rally monster by the time I'm done. :-) Not sure which way everything is going to go yet. We'll get her caged and seam welded and go from there.

Cheers! John

John, if there's not a shop manual CD on eBay for $5 send me a PM. I went 2 years without one and broke a lot of things unnecessarily without it, plus it has all the torque specs...

Patrick, thanks. I know I'll need one soon. Removed the AC compressor today and pressure washed the engine bay(first layer of grime off). Trying to strip as much as I can before the cold weather sets in.

Tryingn to figure out how to get the rocker trim off now-do I just drill out the little plastic things holding it to the doors?

Cheers! John

Yes. And then cry when you find the rust in the rockers. Get the screwdriver out and poke the seam where the rocker meets the floorboard, better to find it now than later.

I'm sure I'll find some rust. :-) We spent the day welding on the Open class WRX, so we're ready for about anything we might find.

Have to finish some seam welding and reinforcements on the WRX, then pull an engine out of my old Land Rover, THEN get the Merkur in the shop for drivetrain removal. There always seems to be a backlog of projects! ;-)

Cheers! John
