Just make those links a little longer to push the diff back and solve your driveshaft problem...

Or move the engine a little forward, which is probably why it's bottoming out in the first place.

so i am going to have to address the engine. As far as i can tell, from the running hot symptoms to the 2 qts of oil burned in 1000 miles, (normal is almost no consumption at 3000mi) is meaning that the engine has run its course. So it was already suffering when i picked it up.

So that means i need to either

1) rebuild this engine.
2) choose another engine.

frankly, id rather choose another engine. Either go back to a rotary of whatever sort, OR another 4 cylinder piston engine.

Can't you get a mazda engine through their motorsports program? I know you have to sign up, but you can get an mx-5 engine for $3k new.

I would think you could throw rings, bearings, and a gasket set at it for under $500.

You could also just throw rings and a gasket kit at it.
Though if you have to run oversized pistons it's probably going to be $500 for a set, and then a head rebuild.

Miata engine correct?

correct. It is the 1.6L B6 engine. But there is a 1.8L on CL locally for 100 bucks. Might aquire that and rebuild it instead.

The 1.8L (BP) engine makes a decent amount of power over the 1.6L. Plus, there are a LOT of know and popular upgrade paths for it. Just make sure to have the correct oil pick-up and pan for rwd, the fwd configuration stuff will cause oil problems. I had my race BP engine, in my Escort rally car, making about 150hp at the crank on pump gas. Although I put a good bit of money into building it, it can still be done fairly inexpensively too, mix and match the right Mazda parts. The one thing I wish I had done was find the '99-'00 head with the shim on bucket lifters.

Drive it til she blows!!! Then swap in the rebuilt 1.8L.
Done a compression test or leakdown test yet?

My first rally car, I had the BP running on a mechanical/vacuum distributor and MegaSquirtII. So the swap can be done easily enough with the current set-up you have, I'm sure.
