Removing Crankshaft damper/pulley
December 10, 2006 07:45PM
I obviously don't have the special ford tool. Pulley didn't come off by hand. Tried a three armed puller, but it started to bend the pulley. Seems to be on the end of the crank quite firm.

Suggestions?

Thanks, John

Mine was rusted on solid. 3 jaw puller to put it in tension, then whacked away with a small sledge until it flew off. Be sure to stand to the SIDE if trying this!

I think mine is rusted on solid. Will heat damage anything behind it?

Cheers! John

If it's the same as the non-turbo model, I've modified a 2-jaw puller (lots of grinder time) to fit in close to the hub.

AFAIK there is no special Ford tool, as it's not a press fit...

Hmmm, the Merkur manual lists it as Ford tool T74P-6312-A

Looks like it goes into the pulley, Has two tabs that engage the holds in the hub of the pulley and has a central screw.

Of course a search of the web doesn't find it, but maybe I'm looking in the wrong place.

Cheers! John

It's a long shot, but Autozone has free tool rentals for specialty stuff like that. I know they have a variety of pullers. I had to borrow the Chrysler Harmonic Damper puller so many times, I just bought it.

Stupid question, but if you're pulling against it, you do have a longer bolt down the center, right? I've never seen one of these Ford pullies, but I have found myself not paying attention and cranking down on the bolt while pulling against it from the other side.

Pullies are stupid. winking smiley

Pulleys are stupid! Yup, pulling against a long bolt. We'll get the damn thing off this week sometime.

Hit it with a BFH. You don't need to hit it hard. Just tap it and rotate the crank and hit it from different sides. I wouldn't even bother with the puller thing. Try some WD-40 or PB Blaster. If you damage it, get another one from the J/Y. You'll probaby end up tossing it anyway when you move the Alt. and P/s pump. While your down there, remove the TB gear and throw it away. Then go get a round tooth set from a Ranger. It removes a slight vibration at around 4K RPM and requires less tension, and is therefor less likely to slip.

Got the pulley off! Sprayed with a bit of PB Blaster(love that stuff), and then used the air bump gun on low setting to push on the back of the pulley while it was under tension with a puller on the front.

I don't know if you can find it but WURTZ has a bolt losening spray, it has nitrogen as well as lubricants, when you spray on a frozen nut/bolt, it literally freezes it for a short time and everything comes apart in a second.

I'll have to look for that. Sounds like a good product. I've used cold to install bushings in frames before and it works great.

Cheers! John
