New proposed RA wing rule
December 22, 2006 11:51AM
Would a Ford Sierra or Escort Cosworth wing comply with # 5?

Proposed wording, based on Mark's idea.

For open category vehicles, wings or aerodynamic devices are only permitted if they are part of the vehicles homologation, available from the vehicle's manufacturer, or meet the following conditions:

1. No part of the aerodynamic device may extend beyond the rear most edge of the OE bodywork or bumper, or be wider than widest point of the OE quarter panels.

2. The maximum chord of the aerodynamic device is 500mm.

3. For 3 volume cars (sedans), the the highest point of the aerodynamic device must be lower than 125mm below the highest point of the roof.

4. For 2 volume cars (hatchbacks), the highest point of the aerodynamic device must be lower than 100mm above the highest point of the roof.

5. No part of the aerodynamic device may extend forward of the geometric centerline of the rear axle.

6. The aerodynamic device shall not interfere with or prevent the opening of the trunk lid or hatch.

7. Any aerodynamic device must be able to withstand a steady force of 100 lbs in any direction without deformation or failure.

8. All aerodynamic devices must be painted or original composite finish and fit with the overall graphics scheme of the vehicle. Unpainted metal wings or supports are not allowed.

Looks like they are going to try to start dictating that cars look "nice" too with rule #8....Might as well adopt the age restrictions from SCCA days...

What if my car has 5 different colored body panels, all dented, and an unpainted half broken body-kit on it? Won't my unpainted wing match the "overall graphics scheme of the vehicle" ?

I know lots of racing series dictate that the cars are presentable using some sort of xx-Feet at xx-Speed kinda rule.

My interpretation:

OEM part from a Ford? Legal.

Heck, my interpretation allows bolting it to *any* Ford product...

You are correct. I had missed the "or"in my inital read. I think the comment on painting is to disallow a metal unpainted wing.

FWIW, I think those silly APC ricer-wings are dorky and anything we can do to distance ourselves from the lame-ass tooner/drifter crowd is a good thing.

I also think anyone that shows up with a Fast-n-Furious style vinyl kit on their rally car should be "pants-ed" on stage at the closing ceremony as an example to others smiling smiley.

Cheers, Ted

I don't know, the homologated VW MKIII wing is right on par with most honda's - which is pretty shocking

Remember my old CRX ??

With busted up rear trailing arm bushings that thing was a handful on icy mud, when I switched to urathane bushings, it started to act crazy, some rocket scientist (really) suggested a spoiler, I installed an ugly aluminium one off of eBay and the car started to handle/behave really decent.

If you had to do it all over again, would you still have gone to urethane?

Nope, I'd go either Nylon or solid aluminium. Nylon wears out but quieter, aluminium has a long life but is noisier than hell.

I have aluminium on the Galant, I love my transfer headsets.
