I could have sworn that when you did the "v" like this in the roof section of the cage, under the FIA rulebook you had to supplement with a "V" that matched in the back stays.

Other way around.
If you want to have a V in the rear stays you HAVE to have the roof V.

Sean, would you care to share why you chose to leave the rear "v" out? Saving weight doesn't seem like your MO. Other than that v your cage looks very near to what I'm thinking.

This is really the cage I'd like to see more people build. Bar placement is right on the money. The half laterals are in place, could be lower and still be fine, could be where they are and be fine. Windshield header is where it should be, could be a bit forward and be ok too. It needs to be really close to or over the doubled sheet metal at the opening. Any farther back and it starts becoming a helmet risk and the opening loses integrity. I would do the backstay termination a bit different, but that is just me. This cage fits nice !

Roof bars...3 configurations are allowed. X, V,/\. No backstay diagonals are required by 253 in the minimum build for any roof bar. If you use a /\ in the backstays (optional) then you need a V in the roof. I'm supposing this is to transfer any loading from a 1/4 panel impact that would otherwise possibly bend the main hoop forward in the middle, pulling the upper sides in toward the drivers helmets.

I can understand the thought of continuing the V back down to the rear stays to transfer energy, but what would it really prevent? The forward bar at the a-pilar junction already has supports in 3 directions. That corner is pretty far away from the occupants. A direct hit there, I can't see that corner bending far enough to reach my helmet.

I did a V for a few reasons. Less tubing, less required gussets, and more room for ventilation, helmets, ect. An X would be stronger for sure, but how much stronger than a V does it need to be? So Pat, weight is a small factor in that decision.

The door opening was my main concern, and as you can see it is pretty well built and thought out.

I am not an engineer, nor claim to know everything. But common some common sense I do have.

I don't personally like the V as the triangulation is not very good and I never do them. I prefer an X in the roof and an X in the rear stays. I also think that at that point an X in the main hoop is overkill but them is the rules. In a car the size of a Merkur there is plenty of room for a roof X without it killing headroom too much even for a tall guy like me. But those are just my preferences and at least the FIA sees fit to give you options.

Sheesh, what a bunch of cage nazi's.

That's about the nicest cage you could build, V's vs X's.....??? What ACTUALLY matters is, it fit's tight as shit, and it's a very high quality installation. Job well done!!

Don't make the mistake in thinking I was in any way degrading Derik's work. We were just having a discussion. Derik's welds are beautiful, he's a freaking robot!

I fitted the dash yesterday, and finished up the steering shaft, which allows for 4" of adjustment in and out.

It was in the same location, I just angled it toward the driver. Last time it was in line with the tunnel.
I angled it because whet putting the car in reverse, i skinned my thumb a few times on the lever.
