I just got a message from a guy that rebuilds these transmissions all the time. He says that

"VW deleted that additional bearing in the 5th housing, and during a rebuild, if it is bad, it is removed and not replaced, the long shaft is retained without the bearing, as per VW papers. You can run the short shaft with no issues at all.

You can either leave it in place, or pull it out, but since it doesn't matter, leave it, it is less work "

So that wont be an issue. Wahoo!

John,
Do you still have any 020 4.25s?
I am interested depending on the outcome of BRS end of the month

rally gods would turn in their graves if they ever knew Lada's were now part of EU rallying!!!

Hey I actually started putting this thing back together yesterday, figured I might as well seeing how LSPR is coming up in 2 weeks...

The 8v 4th gear fits the new pinion shaft just fine. I also found that I had to use the 8v circlips. Other than that it was pretty much the same as normal, though I put the 1st/2nd sync hub on upside down so I had to tear it all down again because 1st wouldnt disenguage. Oppsies.

You do need new bearings for the pinion shaft if you're going to put one in. The part numbers for those are:
411 501 283 E small pinion shaft bearing
311 405 625 B large pinion shaft bearing
They're about $30 each from VW. They come with new races too.

Then there are 4 screws that hold the bearing carrier plate for the main shaft that I fugged up because they're kind of soft. They're:
N 900 751 01 main bearing carrier bolts
They're like $0.33 each and you need 4. You may not need any if you have a good quality 6mm triple square bit. After killing those 4 with my cheapie bit I bought a matco one ($29!) and I got all of those bolts out of my spare transmission without wrecking any.

Then I ordered a transmission gasket/seal set from German Auto Parts.

Its about $54.

And if you still have a stock differential you'll need a bolt kit once you cut the rivits off so you can bolt the new ring gear to the diff. German auto parts has those for about $32.

I didnt need one though because I found a quaife hiding at the bottom of my transmission.

I also found that a 12 point 17mm socket sort of fits on the end of the pinion shaft, but it fits enough that you can use that to check the turning torque.

So thats what I know.

Carl, how did you remove the 2nd gear from the pinion shaft?

Took it to Jerry's for that part because they had a long enough puller to get at it. Otherwise you need like a 9" 2 jaw puller and I couldnt find one in time.
