Corolla updates
July 26, 2012 12:12AM
With all the build threads going on, figured I would add mine to the mix.

I picked up the Corolla from Blake and Joel (and I am thinking it will forever be known as the "Dirty Drifters Corolla" ) not long before OTR, and ran it at OTR (my first event ever) pretty much as I bought it. The car did awesome, and I love it. But even when I bought it I knew there was a few things I wanted to do to "make it mine", and I like to take a different path sometimes. We will see if it bites me in the ass or not for rally, but either way I am having fun.

I can't say enough thanks to the whole Dirty Drifter group, I know they have a ton of work into the Corolla and they have all been so helpful whenever I have needed help. Hopefully my modifications will be tasteful!

First up, I threw it on the dyno right after OTR:

The 4A-GE was removed and after tossing around a couple ideas I went with an engine I have dealt with a couple times and enjoy working with. The Corolla is getting the JDM Altezza 3S-GE BEAMS blacktop. 2.0L, dual VVTi, 11.5:1 compression, and a nice 6spd gearbox. I picked up a clip for a good price. Even came with some real JDM chopsticks in the center console. LOL

New engine beginning to be fitted to the car:

Getting started on the other main issue, the brakes:

Will get more pictures soon. The race is on to get it all done and sorted out for Olympus!

Very interested in watching this build. I keep kicking around the idea of that drivetrain for a race version of my Celica.

Really glad to see you making big improvements where it needed it!

Oh and, we used to refer to it as "Villy's Corolla" until we fixed everything he did, after you fix everything we did it will be "yours"

Hey John, just a suggestion that is doubtless outdated and irrelevant, but
I never thought any unibody modern car was particularly stout and you're about to drop in a nice powerplant that stock will make more shell twisting torques than a 4AGE could ever. I couldn't help noticing that there seems to be done nearly or virtually no stitch welding in the engine compartment and engine compartment to firewall..

It's all pretty white but I sure as hell would think real hard about zapping a "Half inch weld every inch and a half on every exposed spot welded seam", every joint.. "that you can see and reach"

Now with welded in cages, the "coupé" is stiff...but the front end is hanging out. And its usually the front end you ram into stuff.

Every modern car I look at I blanch at the flimsiness of the construction...Designers knew what the car was going to be : a stylish fun little grocery getter..

Now you're going to pound the piss out of it with a bigger motor..

But your decision...

Very cool! I was going to do the same swap but ran out of time/commitment!

That motor makes a nice 200/200....should be perfect for rally!

John speeks the truth. I was involved in the repair of Adam's Corolla after his big white off. After we clamped the car to the frame rack, I could move the front frame horns up/down minimum 3" BY HAND! I did a quickie stitch weld of everything we could get to, and it made a huge improvement.

Poor Patches.....

Nice work John! So glad your happy with the car and having fun with it.

We did stitch weld strut towers and a bit of the frame rails I think before we had it painted. They were starting to split at the fire wall.

Funny you mention doing some strengthening John....

At OTR, first run of Ketchum I bent the driver strut tower in against the brake master. LOL It was also starting to split the spot welds. I told Billy after that first run I didn't care about the time, next time through I was going to flat stop and go around some of that crap. We did, survived and actually went quicker. Go figure.

Anyway, I knew then I wanted to expand on some of the structural bracing (Blake and Joel already had some good bits in there from the last time I guess it got bent up). But we were not sure how much real estate the engine was going to take up (and there is not much to spare). So now that the engine is roughly fitted into place, we can figure out where to run some bracing to triangulate the towers back to the cage. Then the engine will come back out to finish weld the mounts, stitch weld up the body in a few places, add the bracing and some more nice white paint to bring it home. In theory.....

I will post some pictures of that process and can get some feedback from those with more experience than me (which is probably just about everyone).

On my Expedition Celica, I did a fairly easy strut bar design that ties into the top of the firewall. I doubled up the tower top plates, then added tabs for 3/8" heims (might have actually been 10mm). Simple, took about 2 or 3 hours worth of work.

On adams, we did alot of welding at the area where the structure meets the a pillar, behind the fender. There are almost no spot welds there.

I can never understand why people use Heim joints on strut tower braces. Just added expense and now you've added a hinge point on something you're trying to keep from moving around. Just weld a tube on the end so you can clamp it down or better yet, two bolts on each strut tower so it can't pivot at all.
Mind you, yours looks plenty stout with that center mount and a strut tower brace with Heim joints is stronger than no strut brace at all but it could be more effective.
