this piccie is the key thing, fill the gap

any decent grease. I used to use moly-grease, the stuff used in your CV joints cause it is intended for very high pressure applications, but reports from the field seemed to indicate that it needed more frequent re-greasing. So now I use thicker grease for wheel bearings..

Matt,

If it's not clear I think John means to fill the gap that you can see a couple of inches down the tube. I use Liquid Wrench Marine Grease and apply it with a length if 1/2" wide aluminum flat stick. I try to evenly fill that gap without leaving too much on the inside of the rest of the tube. Then I gently insert the shock and rotate it as I gently push it down to use the shock to redistribute the grease in that space. Then I pull it out again and remove the excess that's accummulated on the end of the shock and reinsert.

Make sure your breather hole at the end is not blocked.

Simon

A good friend and rallyist and professional mechanic/shop owner regreased his inverted struts last week. He had to redo it on Saturday as he didn't grease them enough.

You have (or anyone for that matter) have any pics of the sub-a-rat Group A style top hats?

Ah.. and yes.. pretty blue ones please when they get back (just drooling)

Looks like the front ones might be able to do friendly things to camber/caster.

Now it looks like they mount on top of the strut tower right?

Mostly trying to make sure I don't stick something in the way to stop from having the ability to run such things.

Thanks
Jason

Group A ones are offset back and inward for more camber and caster.
Interesting that whole thing is above the strut tower...

Because maybe its not rocket science? Those hats only take one turning and one milling operation. Hopefully they're not 6061 winking smiley

Is that because of increased room for travel? Seems like it'd be easier for bolts to fail than for a top hat bolted in under the strut tower to get pushed thru it, no? Guess...just use bigger bolts and washers?

Also, the higher the actual pivot point (i.e., the center of the spherical bearing), the better the geometry ... usually.

Its mostly for ease of serviceability. As for the bolts to fail, its not that easy, a grade 8 bolt has over 10000lbs of strength, that times 3 its going to be easier to rip the sheet metal than to break the bolts.

So is it "usually" better or not? Or are we just posting for the sake of posting???
