Its mostly for ease of serviceability. As for the bolts to fail, its not that easy, a grade 8 bolt has over 10000lbs of strength, that times 3 its going to be easier to rip the sheet metal than to break the bolts.

Maybe a stupid question, but how is assembling the shock around the car easier? 99% sure on the BMW, the lower bits on the shock mount are large enough they won't fit through the hole in the shock tower.

Or is this simply a case of a "shock" car having things easier than those of us with struts?

Is that because of increased room for travel? Seems like it'd be easier for bolts to fail than for a top hat bolted in under the strut tower to get pushed thru it, no? Guess...just use bigger bolts and washers?

Also, the higher the actual pivot point (i.e., the center of the spherical bearing), the better the geometry ... usually.
So is it "usually" better or not? Or are we just posting for the sake of posting???

The further the distance between the ball joint and the upper mount the less the camber should change through the stroke. (I think... loading medical software right now, mind went blank hours ago)

Not sure I follow your question but the whole strut unit is not assembled in situ, they just pull the whole thing out the top. Because its easier than to wrestle with it under the wheel well and don't need to move the upright out of the way, etc... And as far as the BMW whole size, the whole strut towers are modified and the whole is massive. Hope this answers.

I think that was exactly the question (its what I was wondering anyway). Does the sooper bitchen stuff work the same way on a subarat when ordered with these options?

Its not for camber gain, its more for a reduced strut inclination angle (less stiction and bending loads).

Dave, heres a pic of the strut towers on the Mini WRC. Gives you an idea of how big the hole is.

Front knuckle design is so similar to current WRC cars that is spooky.
Rear is the place that needs MOAR TRAVEL...

And god how i wish I could talk sense into guys about this folly of V8s..
V8s go fast at the wrong end of the straight...first they go DOWN then eventually they go forward...
And using my "OMFG Look at what Brendon Reeves did with a mere 1600!!" meme, what tack can one take? Suggest the all round easiest--and maybe funnest route--Stick a 2300 turbo in it.---and Nope gonna be a V8!!!

And then they wonder why the total experience of the car is nothing like we can see in those vids on the "In car vids" thread.

Yes. But this depends on the angle between the shock and the lower control arm, which changes as the suspension cycles. Most of the time - which I previous wrote as "usually" - longer is better. But it is not impossible to come up with a specific where longer could be worse.

Obviously a lima 2.3 would be much simpler..but It would be nice to see one of these dropped in as well(especially when we are talking about light weight).

Not that i wouldn't prefer the xratty that's wrapped around it..but i sure see alot more cheapy fox bodies around this area...
