Again, how much does that 235bhp volvo motor cost to build? 1/3 of WHAT?

The w201 MB used the W124 rear end housing, so you can get ratios in the mid 4's, still checking on anything shorter.

- MB 2.3-16V is a wonderful engine (185hp) but first you must fix Limey screw-ups, like hone the valve guides so they don't jam (factory recall but hardly any of the owners got them fixed). 190 chassis is junk. Horrible "circulating ball" steering, front end and failing hyd clutch. K-jet can't handle any cam changes and slow as hell to rev. And have a nice day adjusting shim-under valves every 5000 miles on hi-reving race engine. I know this car well 'cause I had one. It's fine as is but no thanks for rallying.
- BMW 6 is a torque beast so no need for hi rearend ratio nor c-r box. Parts are cheap, too.
- BMW has one of the best Club Racing program in the US. Many cars and parts are available from road racers. Cheap.
- Finally; I don't expect anyone to built BMWs because they make too much sense... and would wreck many marriages thanks to overflow of hot chicks at the rallies. Vulvas and X-rats keep families together.

Topi, thanks for the specifics on why to not rally a w201 benz. Everyone kept saying no, but couldn't tell me why.

So what kind of power can the US spec m3 make without new internals or forced induction? Real numbers and costs.

What are the critical weak spots of the E36 M3 that must be dealt with before turning it into a rally car? Every car is going to have some weak spot, BMW or no.

What strength are the gearboxes, how easy are they to rebuild, who sells alternative gear ratios and how much do they cost?

How about the rear diff? Short ratios with clutch LSDs around? How much?

Any clue as to the cost of a bimmer front fender? The price of used E36 M3's has definitely come down. Has the price of body panels also dropped?

If you were to buy an M3 with 150k on the clock, would you rebuild it? With stock internals or aftermarket? How much would that engine build cost and to what result?


These are just some of the questions people are going to need answered to consider the E36. I can find answers to almost all of these questions for the volvo and xratty with simple searches on ss and here.

It seems I'm bound and determined to not do what JVL reccomends, so sell me on a bimmer.

But really Topi, since torque is what we are trying to do, what do the think the torque curve of a 2300 Ford or Volvo TURBO would look like?

And with 2 cylinders, 2 pistons and a bunch of other things LESS .

And what do you suppose the CARs that came with those big-ish 4 cylinder turbps cost to get started?

I have no current plans but this combination has me intrigued. start with a high mileage Lexus IS300 ('01 and '02 cars are just starting to get cheap)




and then you add one of these to turn it into a Altezza...



About the right wheelbase, Toyota build quality, current aftermarket support, stone reliable 210hp, RWD!!!!!, and for the really adventurous the front suspension looks like an easy conversion to struts. It has a really tall upright already so you're not going to experience much change in the camber curve for a big increase in strength.

I don't know. As for stew pidity, I say first you buy 2 lbs of so of prime Pidity.
Take it home, and chop it into chucks about 1 1/2" square, turn the fire up to HIGH and oil the skillet well.
Now if you want yummy stew pidity, you'll want to sear the skin of the pididty, and follow that with a long slow simmer in the pot with the other ingredients.

That's the secret of good Stew Pidity.

Back to the cars, all I'm stressing is that at the current levels of comprtition in the US and Canada that 2300 TURBO motors making a mild 175-225 bhp and lots of FT/LBS is a good simple recipe and can likely match much higher dollar engines, or much LARGER engines.
You haven't forgotten how well Kalle Jardevall did even against the Imported English, have you?
His engine was pretty simple and not very tuned, maybe 240 bhp, MAYBE.

Come on guys, you got the budget go for BMW.

(But a clever person might look back to see when the last time a 4 cylinder turbocharged motor didn't win a WRC round.

(Look, I like Gp2 with hot cracking Normal aspirated motors, and have pushed for over 15 years to make that the Premier class, but FOR GUYS STARTING OUT, SPENDING MONEY IN EVERY DIRECTION AT ONCE, its pretty hard to overlook the effectiveness of 4 cylinder turbo motors.)

No but I'm genuinly impressed that anyone believes all the hype about the M3 after seeing that. BTW BMW apparently was concerned that the general public didn't understand your point either, and protested to get turbos out of BTCC in 92'. Kink of like some other manufacturers protesting the homologation of the current M3, ala in v8 trim for the cup cars and a nonexistant road going version (until now).
