Huh? What am i missing?

A workable solution that meets the criteria and doesn't break the bank.

OK if you have the MkIV stubbie thangs try clocking them till the holes are all on clean metal....

That's the first thing is to bolt the stubbie thangs onto existing beam.

Send some 5 on 100 hubs and I'll knock 3 more holes in them
Convince Tom Buress to get some of these parts in hand to have a local victim---unless he's drooling too much about how much way wicked-er Seans stock Xratty went compared to his Wee Doob and is plotting what to do with my spare car...

Now, back to control arms..

We run the Passat control arms that are a bit beefier than the mk2 & mk3 arms. They are the same length as the mk3 arms so you have to run the longer mk3 axles. Still weak enough to break before the subframe rips out of the unibody for sure....

Make sure to reinforce the ends where the ball-joints attach as this is where they bend.

ALSO-- Make sure to reinforce the subframe by plating the area where the front control arm bolt goes. These 'ears' tend to rip off -- usually as a result of rust compromising that part of the subframe internally (especially true on the driver's side which has a shorter bit --less triangulation).

If it too hard to zqap on a clean mounting plate onto the mounting surface of the beam?

A simple burn-out with a couple of holes and then a few drilled and tapped is like super easy.
Zapp zapp drill 3 holes sounds like it can be done..

Where's that sleepy Tom B?

No, but remember it must be done at least twice for a spare. And once zip-zapped into place becomes a permanent part of the throw-away beam. Now, every beam change requires two donor beams (one mk2 and one mk4). And this still leaves you with 5x100 to 4x100 conversion and track width issues to deal with (and don't forget spares for those modified hubs too). No reason to spend hours with the bandsaw and welder if there is bolt-on goodies that do the trick and are infinitely reversible and reusable.

Well that is the main idea..bolt on for transplantability, if only Tom would drag some junk over...
(and i don't understand what or why you're hacksawing off whatever you're hacksawing off.)

The direction I'm thinking is if there was a simple cheap single plat thang that cost just a little, you could zot in onto whatever beam you have and then when the bem dies, big deal if it doesn't cost a lot..
Drilling hubs?

Fawk I just drilled out 6 brand new Braid wheels for Jason"Frumby" here it wasn't no big deal.
How often you planning on killing hubs?

Drolling 3 holes is a lot better than the counter-bore deal I do on Toms rear discs with integrated hub EVERY TIME the disc is ugly.

Just to mount the calipers?

Josh, you really busy right now or just don't want to do this?

So you have also spent time cutting those plates off a mk4 beam Josh.
I carved them off my donor with an angle grinder whilst the axle was still on the car. I have still got to put them on a mates surface grinder to remove the welds and flatten them out.
I may just weld them onto my mk1 beam. But I am using 5 x 100 wheels and could use the 10mm extra each side to widetrack the vehicle. So this is sort of more viable for me.

John, re-drilling 3 holes remember the 5 studs are M14 and not M12 like the 4 studs. You'd have discs to drill too.

Yeah but I push hard converting things to a nice VW M14 stud---14mm is what VW Motorsport used after all...

I've used these on everything for 20+ years, 10 bucks for a 5 pack

Well, these mount both the calipers and the stub in one convenient package....

I am both busy traveling for work all the time (average losing at least 12 weekends a year overseas in fun places like Nigeria and Somaliland) plus no fewer than 22 weddings eating up my weekends (worktime) in the past 3 years. That is over 1/3 of my would-be-rally-prep-time assuming I never want to be doing other fun things like mountain biking, actually rallying, traveling, camping, xc-skiing, or building other ish... And I, like many many would-be-rally-project-finishers don't want the headache of yet another "simple" cut and weld this to that and mill it here and there project that 'should' take a few hours but actually ends up consuming a full month of weekends to complete not including spares or doing it all over again the first time you go and bend it. Bolt-on please! This IS why , despite my lack of interest in Subarus, Subies are so popular among people-who-actually-make-it-to-events-with-cars-that-work.

Sounds like a simple adapter plate from mk1/2/3 to mk4 stub axles with the ears for the drums would be easy-peasy to make.. someone want to send me some of those cut off plates to measure up? A simple water jet followed by a reamer/drill/tap should put them in order...

I did these for a buddies dub shop

and came in under 50 a piece with bolts
