e36 from "P" to "O2H"

Thought that i´d also make my part on filling this page...
Last year i drove with stock 318iS on 100AW, during this past year some work has been done with the car, Old 190tml M42 moved away from engine bay and almost as old M52B28 came in place instead, Good friend of mine, Mike Hooper, did the installing while i was back in Finland for the summer... Engine got M50 inlet, M3 cams and remapped ecu, and on trans we went even older and replaced the electronically controlled GM trans to ZF4HP22 from E30, this way we hoped (eye rolling smiley) to get rid of downshifting problems, which we didn´t..
Original e36 springs were replaced with convertible ones (budget....) and with this set-up we headed up to RWV.. after 10 stages the junkyard ZF surrendered, and we went on doing something that we can do better.. drinking beer.. At the time of dnf we were 6th overall and 3rd on 2wd..
So, on October i arrived back for the winter and started working with the Beamer again, as both me and my codriver arent actually the smallest ones, roofwent was installed to help keeping the smell of sweat out, both front and rear bumpers lost the aluminium structures, somewhat -40lbs per bumper, cool air intake was made, wing extensions took place too (doesn´t really need them, looks a bit more race though...) bonnet and trunk lid lost some weight, fuel cell was installed, and it even got the 4th PIAA to nightface... with 3 it looked a bit too Swedish..
Trans was also rebuilt, and that´s about where the budget ended... Might be that 100AW stays as distant dream, but Mr Von Kessler and i look forward to drive at Sandblast.. we´ll see..
Once again, sorry for my bad Finglish

Jari,
You may be able to adapt something like this http://www.brunosautomotive.com/brc.htm to a dog box. Used ones should be around for a more reasonable price. Probably a chore but something to discuss over drinks.

Thanks for the link, completely new system for me... and definately something to look into..
Back home i´ve been driving with Opels for years, TH180 is a bulletproof option with good ratios and no downshifting problems, that´s why i really have not looked into systems like that much.. But now i will.. And now the drinks..thumbs up

What is the downshiting problem? Too much, too little, wrong timing?

I drive the car "manually", on start from 1st to 2nd to d etc... and also downshift the same way, with Opel you can pull 1st gear in on 80mph and it will engage, but BMW doesn´t engage lower gears before the speed is low (safe) enough.. So normally what i need to do is that from the start when i get up to 3rd gear, i pull the shifter back to 1st, and when speed goes low enough, it will drop smaller gears in, difficult becouse normally engine would already be out of torque then, and the fact that i don´t know when it will be shifting makse it difficult too..
easy to compare here:

Oh I see..horrible. Bog, bog, bog then downshift almost when it doesn't need to anymore. For grins and giggles maybe TCI or Hughes can modify a manual valve body? Here's an article that has links at the bottom for some heavy hitters in the auto trans world. Might be worth a call. http://www.rodauthority.com/tech-stories/drivetrain/getting-shifty-gm-automatic-overdrive-transmission-tech/

I can whip up a trans controller for electronic transmissions that use solenoids to shift and set line pressure. I already came up with a few ideas for a GM 4L80E(too hefty for anything Rally related I'd imagine)... It would be pretty cool to set a trans up with a paddle shifter.

A few years ago I came up with schematics to control the W4A33 in Eclipses/Talons. The auto transmissions have been becoming more and more popular in the drag racing scene with these cars, and I started coming up with a setup that would offer 100% manual shifting by using push buttons/paddles/etc, but allow for 'nearly' stock shifting for street driving.

4L80E is way too big for the BMW, no room in tunnel, and coupling it with the engine might also be bit of a task... There´s also those few common problems involved, no budget for anything nice (that can be seen even in my clothes.. grinning smiley) and no proper shop where to work with the car, and still the fact that i´m mainly tinkering with it by myself, not many rally people here in FL..
So, even though there might be good options available for it, seems that at least for now we just need to try to do our best with what we have now..
But all ideas are appreciated, Powerball might just do the trick one day..thumbs up smiley

I wasn't suggesting a 4L80, I was saying I was messing with one previously. I can come up with a controller for any electronically controlled trans if I have the proper schematics and info.

What do you need? Trans electrical schematic and valvebody diagrams? Solenoid to gear relationship? I could probably come up with that stuff.

Schematics of the solenoid pack and the plug on the trans, solenoid to gear relationship, and a general run down on how the factory setup operated(solenoid voltage, pwm, how line pressure was controlled, etc). I can find everything I need if given the trans type/model/whatever.

Some transmissions control line pressure(shift firmness basically) electronically, some don't. Some valvebody/pump regulator/governor/modulator mods may still need to be made.

The only issue is trying to develop the controller without having the car/trans on hand. Should there be any bugs or necessary modifications, it could become a headache. What type of trans are you thinking about, Sean?
