Have you ever smashed a windshield and tried to get it out? It's a bitch of course. I guess the answer to your question is both yes and no.. It would depend on how your side glass is mounted. If you're talking about the door glass and your door has a frame all the way around then I would say yes it will definitely impede your exit because you will have to go out the windshield assuming the doors won't open. (I don't see smashed laminated door glass rolling down, at least not easily.. haven't tried it)
More to the point, I think I'd rather have no side glass than glass I can't see out of.
