Image mainly for clarity. There's no way I'd pay that much!
Have another cup-o-tea and think of the $$$ rolling out of the Fiestas as they drive by.

Oh OK . You know me, I probably had my mind I dunno distracted, that's it, by the anticipation of finally, once again actually having LOTS of money again when the Fiesta parts start pour out.

I do think that with the right stuff we can make it snap over if C shaped

What do YOU think? I think you got good head ---Is it asking guys too much to unscrew the "inner socket assemble" (which takes like 3 minutes IN POSITION.)?
I don't know what guys think is too hard..

The manual and power steering racks differ slightly in how the tie rods attatch, manual = female, PAS = male. I have several racks stripped here so can take measurements and a couple of pics. thumbs up

Then see if it is possible to come up with a one style piece that suits mk1, 2 and 3 racks.

Dark and freezing here at the moment, but tomorrow I should have time.

If i were in tha fab business i would:
1. rent a potential rally car (fiesta)
2. tear it appart get some good measurements and pictures.
3. return the car,
4. build the parts,
5. re rent the car , test fitments,
6. produce and sell the parts.

It boggles my mind that anyone buys ex-rental-cars.

I've heard winking smiley of people modifying (drilling holes etc.) rental cars to test equipment and then returning them.

Used cars? Sure. Ex-rental? No. Fucking. Way.

Way off topic but i have heard from my old man that back in the day a few Hertz mustangs were returned with a little V6...

Unscrewing the inner tie-rod sucks. There's no room and you need a massive wrench. Pulling the boot back and slipping something over would be nice.

The issue I see with the c-clip idea is that it may have a tendency to pop off if slammed against the stops. Even though it is slightly captured by the bigger bore in the rack housing, you may loose it.

Gotta get it just right. But the force in it would be smooosh-u-lar force not pop-off-u-lar force, knowwhatImean?

Ok, I see what you are talking about now. You would need one of these O or C shaped spacers on either end of the rack bar yes?

Ain't piccies marvelous?
Yeah on the bar inboard of the "inner tie rod assembly's big fat head, so if I was gonna make some I'd need to know the OD of the housing and the OD of the bar of the rack...

But it's been explained I should run my business making parts for NEWer cars----even though nobody is asking for the parts... Make the parts and they will come...

So no idea if there's any point somebody posting the dimensions, besides you guys are gonna dump the old VWs for something better and all that work figuring out soulutions is wasted.

What color new car you going buy?

Hmm, where to start......

I have looked out a few racks and tie rods. I took some pics but TBH it looks messy and not possible to make a one part fits all sort of component.
It appears the mk1 and mk2 manual racks use the outer edge of the inner tierod end to butt against the outer edge of the rack to act as the steering stops. They both differ in the inner tierod end profile and at either end of the rack too.

The PAS setup looks far easier to deal with as the tierod ends butt against the inside of the rack. However one side of the rack bar is 22mm and the other 23mm.

A pas rack limiter would not work on a manual rack well as it would not catch the rack's outer case, and there is then little to stop the limiter sleeve hitting the pinion.

I recall when I made steering rack limiters for my mk1 platform vehicle I cut up a used inner tierod and part bored it in the lathe, then flipped it so it slid over the rack bar the distance I required, but kept the threads at the end as it need to act as a lock nut for the real tierod end.

I took about 10 pics and could upload them later.

EDIT> And it looks like all the Fiesta racks I had have been stolen.... Weird as no fecker rallies them over here.

Pics........ask questions if it helps clear up anything.
Tierod ends left to right, mk1 manual mk2 manual , mk2 / 3 PAS

Mk3 Golf PAS rack (rhd)

Mk1 Golf manual rack (rhd)

PAS steering boot showing little orifice for breather pipe. A real pain to try and refit boots when the rack is on the car.
