Since this seems hard for some to grasp.. RA build template.

Since the idea of anarchy construction seems hard for some to grasp. If one is starting a 'build thread' here it should contain a few std elements:

First up. A picture of all of the 'creature comfort' crap that came in the car that is never going back in:

Next, a picture of the interior (we'll even use a Suba-Rat-Fawk) that's just about ready for the death ray:

After that, forget to take pictures of the death ray process. Just remember it being > 90 degrees out, and 20 degrees under the car. All the while smelling like brownies. Then still finding amusement in the fact that a guy named Tim Taylor (the toolman) is helping you out and DAMN does he have some tools.

Next.. for good measure. Make sure to include photos of at least 2 fabrication tools:

Needed to fudge a little on that last pic as I seem to have no pictures of my welder. But hey its a pic of a tool, building another tool, to build (construct even) a car smiling smiley...

And then, to please the geeks and douche canoes alike, we'll throw in a pic of a 3d scan of the area where the cage mounts to said car. Scan used to draw up the feet to be cutout on a torchmate table

.

And then. like 90% of the car builds I've seen. Let the poor gutted car sit around for the better part of a year. Missing events because 1.) you moved 1200 miles, 2.) you're still trying to get the build finances figured out after getting laid off and moving, and 3.) the damn E30 keeps eating your time.

That work for ya'll? am I missing anything?..

You forgot an action shot of someone cutting or welding, a picture with beer can strewn about in the background and a to do/wish list.

Ha.. you generally won't see any alcohol in the shop when I'm working. Friends don't trust me with tequila and a plasma cutter smiling smiley.

There was this one time after 2 750s of Patron that I found 2 propane torches during a party. They locked me in a dog crate for that one...

smiling smiley

No dogs were harmed.

Now onto a somewhat serious question. I'm working with a main hoop/laterals that were bent off the bend-tech drawings for another GD. The hoop fits quite nice.

Next up is notching the laterals. I only get one shot to get these notches right without causing some pain. I have reverse engineered the bends, so I should be able to re-create them. Only issue is right now i only have a 1.5" die. So.. I'd rather not fawk this up.

Anyone have some suggestions on how they get things lined up and notched?

I have a decent notcher + those pipe contour things if that helps any.

Thanks
Jason

I learned to do it by eye, felt marker and torch or bandsaw nearly 40 years ago. I do have one of those new profiler gadgets but rarely used it.

Bend your tube and leave it a couple inches long. Set it in the car and mark the center where it will join the main hoop. Cut the tube and then mark the center of the guts, they are usually never straight across from each ohter on the main hoop due to the bend. So the bottom may be at 5 oclock and the top at maybe 10 oclock. Make the cuts about 3/4 of an inch from the end of the tube and trial fit. A little adjustment, small grinder, big file and there you go. Old school.

Keep the front leg bases somewhat near the door opening so you can weld the outside of the door bars. Make the mounting plates go up the sill also. The A pillar support needs to be within 4 inches of the mount. So if the mount is only a plate on the floor the jopint must be lower (harder to weld). If the plate is on the floor and another goes up the sill then the AP support can mount that much higher. Did I explain that ok?

This reminds me. You need at least one picture that was taken from an angle that makes it look like you did something incorrectly, such that a raging argument can ensue before being shown to be moot.
