Ha yeah.. the Evil Ice Cream Truck smiling smiley...

1967 Kaiser/Jeep M725 5/4 ton Amberlamps with a few minor upgrades.. Was originally gong to be built from a W250 donor but the deal for that fell through and I just couldn't cost justify a 6bt @ the prices I was seeing.

Found an 05 hemi durango drivertain (engine/trans/t-case) in canukistan for $1400 or so delivered (2007ish). Swapped that in.

Had a bud who's family owned a used parts place. Got the front frame + axle of a 1995 2500 dodge ram chopped off and dropped off at the shop. Found the M725 front spring mounts were exactly where they needed to be for the lower control arms. Cut off and grafted on the spring bucket/shock mounts. Added upper control arm mounts + panhard bar mount. Fabbed sway bar mounts and the front end was done.

The rear has had 2 different chevy 14 bolts under it. The first was an older style converted to disc brakes to clear the rear springs. Never managed to get the e-brake setup right with the eldo calipers that were on there. got a deal on a 2005 10.5" chevy rear axle and swapped that in 2 weeks before driving it out to CA along with a NP241 trans case, heat, and wipers (was a busy few weeks.)

Its still a work in progress. Still need to get some proper length u-bolts bent up to get the rear level with the front. its 2" off. Go figure that I was working off of the dodge spring installed heights not realizing how much lighter this thing is than a modern truck (6000lbs unloaded) So they sit about 1.5" taller than they are supposed to and they are the shortest factory spring.

Taken on its recent trip from San Jose, CA to Longmont, CO. We were stopped on 70 in WY for a truck fire for about an hour.

Appears I have bartered for Dewalt electric die grinder. That's should be handy for some notch fitting.

I have no selection of normal files though. There have been numerous times when I'm working on something when I was like 'damn if I only had a file'.

Anyone have any recommendations on that or shall I just hit up HF and find something cheap?

Good square piece of chalk. Hold it at a 45 degree angle with big end in and draw profile. 4.5 in angle grinder and fit it slowly. Do the ground side profile first, then the upper one, which is usually around 150 degrees or so inward and a less deep profile.

Oddly. I've yet to find a good square piece of chalk. But I did find this:

I have one of those also. I think the only use it has gotten is to deface cars. At least if you consider hidden penis drawings a defacement.

Ah.. that works Airgas is much much more manly than craft store. I've hunted through a few office places and I believe a target, no dice so far. Saves me a Walmart trip (and years on my life smiling smiley )..

There's probably something else I need form Airgas that I don't know yet either.

I also need to figure out what/where all of my magnets are stuck to. Hate having tools with magnets on them, cause I stick them to things then forget what I stuck them to instead of putting them on a shelf/box where they belong..

They might know this as "Soapstone", if you ask for "square chalk" and they give you a blank look....

Ah.. .Soapstone.. thanks for that. Some on the way now (won't make it over to airgas for the next few days, bike + bus to work so amazon and prime...)

Did run into one holdup with the pre-fab 1/2 laterals i have.

If the lower leg is long enough for the roof section to meet the main hoop @ the right spot the upper bend hits a spot of the unibody and no fit.

With the lower leg shorter things to fitting better, but at that point the lower is 10-15 degrees out of 'plumb' in '2' directions (well one in reality, but 10-15 front to back, and another 10-15 leaning into the car).

On the plus side, I did reverse ingurneer the current 1/2 lats and hoop into bendtech, so I can rework a new one and compare it with the old one before bending it up.

Looks like I'm off to go grab a pro-tools 1.75" die though (only have a 1.5 at the moment).

I've seen the Custom Cages and Jackson prepped cars use 2 bends in the upper part of the 1/2 laterals to get past the contact issue I was having. Best I can tell that's legal, the FIA book only talks about having 1 bend in the lower section of the hoop and possibly the laterals.

Offending sheetmetal on inside of cars can easily be adjusted to fit with a nice 9lb BFH..

No doubt, but this is right @ the top corners of the windshield. I'd rather make up a new lateral than beat the crap out of that area of the car. I've already cut away about everything else in the way..

I've determined this car really is made of tin foil. The floor is maybe 1mm at best.

So.. what wire do you guys like to use to put these things together? Its within range of the 030 I have in the machine, but at the bottom end. For me normally I'd rather have it feed a bit faster than that and run a smaller wire. Would a roll of 024 be useful here?

Machine is a trusty Millermatic 175.

Thanks
Jason

Don't you want to spec wire size, heat, and speed for the thicker material anyhow so the 1/8" or thicker plate being the concern.
Yeah, cars are surprisingly thin.
