Well I suck, well done Justin, your rate of progress is amazing and quite inspiring. Do you work on cars for a living or something along those lines?

Yeah..It was funnier than hell when he called cause he was axing about BMW suspenders and we're all over the map and I like what I like becaue you know the EVENTUAL up=grading for mere dollars, right so at some pouint in like second long call he just says "Should I just build a 240 instead?"
Me "er uh well er um" Him "I have 2 of them"

And a couple days later some guy who wanted this (dead POS) nice fwd 850 traded him straigh across for the 850 giving him a nice 88 240!

Helps sometimes to be in the trade, eh?

I was a pipeline welder for a while. Then, I wanted to find a local job and ended up at a mechanic shop that works on BMW and Volvo. It's nice to have a lift to work on my side projects.

Went the safe route on the door bars.

I'm assuming you're building the cage to FIA 253?

I'm helping build a roll cage myself and am curious if your door aperture opening "A" is 300mm ( 11.8" ) minimum? It's hard to tell in your photos (lengths can be deceiving). Or if "B" is 250mm max.

I don't want to sound like an arm chair fabricator. But in the past three weeks my friend Ron and I have been pouring over the FIA doc trying really hard not to screw up his cage. So I have dimensions flying around in my head when I look at cage pics. It's easier to remove a bar that's only tacked in place.

The rest of the work looks great.

One thing to remember about those dimensions also Mark is that they are in reference to the door opening and not to the main hoop.

Cage looks great. I always put a bit of a kink (allowed up to 20 degrees, I usually do 10-15, three pulls on my JD2) in the a-pillar support. Just make sure it stays vertical in side view and you will get yourself a little knuckle clearance.

Great bender and profiler. We were remarking the other day how impressed we've been with the profiler. Few things I've learned using mine...
Use Lennox hole saw blades. They seem to last the longest for me. I've tried 5-6 different brands.
Use lube. I use some spray shit from PB Blaster company that is probably expensive but it's easy to keep track of and one can gets me through two or more cages.
Clean clean clean. I go through two cans of brake clean easily on a cage. Especially cleaning the cutting lube off. I keep thinking I need a better cleaning method than brake clean and paper towels...
A flapper disk on an angle grinder (like layered pieces of sandpaper) works much better than a grinding wheel for fine tuning a profile. Less heat or sparks and faster.

Anyhow, nice work!

Correct about door opening.

And those Lennox hole saws work wonders!

I figured there was no sense in not trying every one I could find to buy. I've had some that literally shredded teeth within a few cuts. A good Lennox one will last me almost two cages. Usually I have to force myself to replace it when I realize it is missing half the teeth but still cuts better than some of the other options.

Here are some pics from a few weeks ago. Everything on the rear suspension is tacked up. need to make some spacers and articulate the suspension to check for any clearance issues.

What did you make the rear shock towers out of? Need to do something similar for back of BMW compacts.

Thanks,

Dave

Top suggested 090 or 13g, sides can be 0625 or 16g or get all heavy duty and do 080 or 2mm.
Hey about to finish yout top mounts..get your checkbook dusted off..

I'd always planned on something around 1/8" for the mounting ear, 12 gauge for the top plate and 14 or 16 gauge on the lower section. Just haven't had a car needing it yet and willing to pay for it come through yet.

You have, of course, seen this article on Chlorinated solvents and Welding, I assume?

http://www.brewracingframes.com/id75.htm

I thought this might be a good place to interject that, for other readers even if you knew about it.

Safety First!

SDS for Phosgene:

http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/MHMI/mmg176.pdf

Excerpt:

Quote

Routes of Exposure

Inhalation

Inhalation is the major route of phosgene exposure. The odor
threshold for phosgene is 5 times higher than the OSHA PEL.
Thus, odor provides insufficient warning of hazardous
concentrations
. Phosgene’s irritating quality can be mild and
delayed, which may result in a lack of avoidance leading to
exposure for prolonged periods. Phosgene is heavier than air and
may cause asphyxiation in poorly ventilated, low-lying, or enclosed
spaces.

Oh - and 4-1/2" flap-discs are The Shit for metal work! Been using them for decades.

We use non-chlorinated brake clean...

Can you even buy chlorinated?

I do not know, it's been awhile since I bought some [brake cleaner] - HOWEVER, I do know I have a can or two sitting in the asplodin'-proof cabinet that is chlorinated.

Others may as well.

Teh Editz:

I just recalled - some of the cheaper carb-cleaners still use chlorinated solvents; I bought some the other day. It is getting harder to find, they will likely go the way of the Dodo soon as well.
