Rally America Fuel Cell ?
October 04, 2013 10:16AM
I was reading thru the rules for Rally America. I know that NASA requires a FIA fuel cell if the original tank is not used. What about Rally America? I did not see it specificly state that a fuel cell needs to be used if the original tank is not used? Can anyone clarify for me? Thank you

Rally-America Rules
5.7. FUEL CONTAINERS

A. No fuel other than that carried in the OE fuel tank or FIA FT-3 or higher fuel cell bladder shall be carried in any vehicle.

Emphasis mine.

Threadjack: Assuming I'm still using the OE tank, can I use a part like this:

that allows me to use two fuel pumps?

Fuel pumps are vital to the car going. Why voluntarily make access to a critical compenent into a chore?

That set up in fuel cell with ready access I can see. But do you have ready access?

I thought I had at least marginal access - I know the later cars look like this:

but now that I think about it, the "access door" on the car is this:

Regardless of whether I'm using a single pump in the OE tank, or two pumps in the OE tank, access is problematic (unless I cut a bigger hole in the floor...).

Since it's a hatchback, I've got to do the whole boxes-within-boxes thing to run a fuel cell... Not sure what any other options would be to run dual pumps.

I suppose it's doable (typical even?) to run a OE factory pump to a pair of inline pumps (Bosch 044 or similar). But in that setup aren't you still SOL if the single in-tank pump dies?

2 pumps in the spare tire well and cover that with some 1/32 aluminum with some 1/16 L angle pop rivetted in for reinforcement so you and have the spare sit on it. 3 quick release DZUS things so quick acess..And a big stinkin Bosch filter in there too>

Easy!

point me at the right ones - looks like bosch's catalog calls the 044 the FP200, so probably the 165 l/hr version? I started typing in "bosch" in google, and it popped up "044".

But still - you're feeding the two pumps in the spare tire well from the in-tank pump, right? What happens when the in-tank pump fails?
