2:1 quickener with manual steering?
July 29, 2007 06:50AM
The instructions for the Howe 2:1 quickener say to only use it with power steering. I don't have power steering but bad experience this weekend suggest that I need to do something about the shitty slow ultimate-parking-machine steering in the VW. It's either that or push it off of a cliff, beat it with a sledge-o-matic, and set fire to the hulk while dancing around it.

I've driven an srt4 rally car with a howe quickener (dont know if it was the 1.5:1 or the 2:1, but it was 2 turns lock to lock on the steering wheel) without the power steering belt on and it was nearly impossible. It might be a little easier with a manual rack, but I'd still get a power set up. With the vw's power rack and the 1.5:1 quickener it comes in at about 2 turns lock to lock. Even just a power rack is noticeably quicker than vw's manual rack.

Not concerned about the steering effort, there is NONE with the 4 turns and none times two is still none smiling smiley

it'll certainly be a lot lighter than my first car... 5000lb fullsize Ford with a power steering box and no pump. Build some arms like Popeye with that setup.
