Magical regulator?
October 13, 2013 06:37PM
Does anyone know of a magical regulator (or combination of bits) that allows one to haul a nitrogen tank to events rather than a compressor+generator combination? I'm basically looking to find a (cheaper) way of using a standard air-tool setup with a nitrogen tank.

I'm not sure about the volume that can flow through a standard regulator. We use one for tires, and adapting one to work with air tools would be easy. It just might no have enough oomph.
Why not just buy an air compressor?

I crewed for a guy that used a tank of nitrogen for air tools. It had enough umph to zip the wheels on and off anyways. That was 12 years ago, so I don't know the details about the regulator set up. But it can be done, anyways.

Come on Eric, how much major overhaul type woik you joikin with at an event?
Big Idea N0275: Woik like a joik in da garage in advance of "The Big Rally race"

At the big Rally race: DRIVE. Use steering wheel occasionally and avoid hitting big scary things that bend and destroy things.
Result!

In service nudge at things with toe, make a face, say fuckit it'll do and go schmooze with friends.

Get some speed wrenches just to have.

Easy, fast relaible..$11

Are you like weak and frail and can't twirl wrenches?

Or what?

Get one in 3/8" drive and one in 1/2" drive and no miracles needed and works anywhere, anytime.

Just get a regular regulator. Way back when I used to haul an air compressor around but a nitrogen tank takes up less space and is quieter than a generator and compressor. Of course, a nitrogen tank has a finite amount of air but a big one will give you everything you need for a weekend, even using air tools. Seems like I mostly use mine for filling up the potato gun though...

What's your service rig? Do you have room for another AC compressor under the hood? My Jeep will do 4-5 cfm @ idle, and plenty more with a sufficiently sized tank installed. I have another such setup that's going on the tow rig.

My concern with using nitrogen for tires/tools would be just not having enough of it. If you're looking for an impact replacement an electric one will do and would probably be cheaper than the nitrogen regulator bits. If you're looking to run something like a cutoff tool or die grinder you're going to burn through your supply right quick.

Erci, do you have a way to transport this safely and per regulations? I recall that you have an open trailer, and how to transport it upright and properly secured as it legally is supposed to be done is a possible issue for you. Having it flat on your open trailer is an invitation to be stopped. Transporting it inside your main tow vehicle is not too smart, in fact it is quite dumb; that is not just an opinion, BTW.

I can't fathom why you would need air tools at a rally unless your name rhymes with Roswell or if you rally a VW. Build a car well and you probably won't have much to do. What's wrong with a compressor and tank? We used one to push a bearing off a stub shaft with an air hammer once. It was tiny and provided enough air for the job. Cut off wheel or impact wrench never, occasional tire refill or air hammer use, maybe.

Oxygen regulator off your torches with the argon end off your welding regulator will move plenty of air. way nice.

You would want a regulator from the gas supply shop for this. You can get them in two stage styles. The first regulates it down to 175 psi or something, then the second part is adjustable. I don't remember the cost.

Or run oxygen AND acetlyene through your impact gun with an ignitor. Bam, now your IR231 has antilag.

Run the Acetylene higher than 15psi working-pressure, you don't even need the Ignitor....

Yeah the prefered way is probably the Anders way but mine truly works fine for the cheap guy. Not sure the acetlyene would be worth adding for rally. Im sure that would need a restrictor to slow down the air speed of the impactgun.
