Yet Another Skidplate Mounting thread...
October 17, 2013 01:56PM
I'm pretty clear on the notion of building a sturdy frame for the skidplate.

What I've never quite gotten - what's the preferred way to attach the skidplate to a frame?

The obvious is bolt heads sticking out, like so:

But that seems like you're just asking to have the bolt heads beat to smithereens.

I've seen some "clever" approaches using stuff welded to the top of the plate, but those seem like they'd be a real PITA to remove.

Seeing the latest Ken Block video this morning (seriously!) prompted me to do a little more searching. Looks like lots of folks are basically just counter-sinking them?

<<Seriously, video grab from Ken Block

Seems like it would be simple enough to weld a second piece of aluminum on the back of the plate, drill the oversize hole through the first piece and the bolt-size hole in the second? Maybe not as fancy looking as the video capture, but the same functionality, no?

My favorite setup so far:

two bolts on and off.

Find a piccie how Sean M used the Soooper bitchin "606" method.
I don't like this fad of having the leading edge of the sump guard exposed.
I like to lay it in the inside of a L angle running across the front secured to sturdy side mounted plates to dissipate loads out into something strong, like the chassi rails

But what the fawk do i know anything. Those eople who caught to forward edge and peeled back their plate and ran over it and high centered and DNF, that was a freak accident, and act of Gawd.. Don't worry, live on the Wild Side. Probably never happen to you.

So you've got the alloy supports bolted to the chassis rails.
The square tube crossmember bolted to the alloy supports.
Pretty sure I'm clear on the support for the sumpguard.

Looks like with that kevlar setup, it just bolts straight in to the crossmember, bolt heads just hangin' out? That's what I'm trying to understand.

something other than the long upward-sloped piece like the BMW in the first post?

OK Sean used square section and it was also a bumper mount thrown in, I'm say take a L angle and lay the leading edge on top of the horisontal part of the L, and bolt thru...pretty hard to catch that leading edge when theres a steel L piece protecting it..

And of course if you can counter-bore mounting bolts so the heads are below the surface...

Damn what kind of jack stands are those? I would actually feel safe crawling under my car with those supporting it!

Alls I know is my Talon had pins on the back, greatest invention ever! The front mounting could have been better, but it was basically two bolts and yank it out!

And no fucking around playing "throw the pizza dough" while trying to line everything back up while putting it on, either.

That picture up at top with the angle grinder - SPARKS? Meaning that sucker is STEEL? I thought I was the only person dumb enough for that.

Chromoly maybe? I dunno how much heavier that would be than aluminum. Or how much lighter than regular steel.

Maybe a fluke?

ALL steel and iron is approx 7.9 to 8.1 g/cm3
aluminum is approx 2.7g/cm3

And just for fun, magnesium is about 1.7g/cm3

Bear in mind you never use 100% pure aluminum or magnesium, both are slightly stiffer than old used taffy, most aluminum is 6-105 other stuff and most magnesium is 20-25% aluminum---both alloy with copper and somehow some of the softest metal around becomes stronger than shittier grade of steel (like the steel wheels are stamped from).

Material thickness becomes a significant factor...3 times thick sound horrible but the right aluminum 3 times thicker is stronger than the wrong steel at 1/3 the thickness.

It can be. Talking with the Msport guys working on the v1.0 HFHV when I was in the octane academy, they said the front and rear skid plates are steel for ballast reasons. They even have mounting provisions to put more ballast weight on them if needed. They basically design the cars to be underweight and then add ballast for balance.

I think that Antony worm guy mentioned it as well and was a sign how screwed he got as a customer car. Where his car had AL skid plates and was still over weight while the factory drivers had steel skid plates with ballast.

Well, that's definitely one way of lowering the center of gravity.

Also, upon rereading my comment, I think I meant fluke as in a trick for the video just to look cool.
