I cleaned off all my gunk under the Civic with this:

http://www.harborfreight.com/power-tools/oscillating-tools/oscillating-multifunction-power-tool-60428.html

$20 and the thing is still going strong. I've had to buy several of the replacement scraper blades, but the tool itself keeps going. Sure, it takes a while and your hands get a bit numb from all the vibration, but it took me an evening to remove the underfloor, probably another evening or two to do the wheel wells. I was lucky and my in car sound deadening just peeled off in chunks so I just wire wheeled the seam sealer.

I have one of those, I use it for windshields. I have to say the LN is well worth the money compared to using one of those for the undercoating.

It was 23f here last night. sad smiley
I may embrace this cold winter weather and get the rest of the tar sound proofing off this VW shell I have here.

Edited to correct the deg C to F.

I found that it needs to get really cold to get that stuff to come off easily in the winter. The coldest night I tried on the volvo last winter was -12F, then it was pretty easy to scrape it off with a putty knife. Much above 0 and it wasn't frozen enough.

Entire under body. Never know where you're going to need to weld, getting that stuff off ahead of time is nice. Plus when you're stitching the inside and welding the cage in you're not dying of smoke inhalation from the bottom catching on fire every 2 seconds.

Lots of advantages.

My lungs kinda hurt today from all the burning shit last night while Scott was welding the cage feet into the Kern's BMW GTS car. Sucks doing it at 10 pm when it's 20 degrees outside so you don't wanna just open the door fully...

Scott said, as he lit up a cigarette after, I feel like we should smoke more to give a good layer of protection from all this nasty shit.

We get really big dewars of Argon at the lab for the mass spec. I may enquire about smaller liquid nitrogen dewars to do stuff like get glue and tar off areas that cage feet go onto.

Put a warm-mist humidifier in the shop, as near as possible to where you are working. The water molecules "grab" the nasties from the air and drop to the floor.

I ended up wearing an organic respirator for some sections (like strut towers) where smoke would pour through the openings right into my lungs... Started after one session where a little blood was coughed up winking smiley

Safety first right*? RIGHT??? winking smiley

*Safety implied and not followed. Motto not valid in soviet block countries, mainland china or amatur garages.
