Fuel tank protection.
November 17, 2013 03:56PM
What are people with impreza's doing for fuel tank protection? I hear some people using kevlar, not sure if thats something I want to get involved with.

I was thinking of just making two small skidplates one for each side of the tank. Not sure what type of protection is needed. I have a fuel cell in the current car. 1/8" of 6061, 3/16"?

I just have 1/8in uhmw plastic bolted to the underbody before the tank and then zip tied to the front lat link (use big zip ties).

Did the same, held up for 4 events so far without any signs of issue.

Can you find those sheets locally? Been brainstorming the same type of armor as that. Also need some plasticky material for door cards.

Sabic will likely have something in stock(or they'll be able to order it). They have a location in Minneapolis...Not sure how far that is from you. http://www.sabicpolymershapes.com/polyshapes/PShapes/branchlocator/branchus.jsp

I think they only sell to other companies, not the general public. If that's the case, shoot me a PM...I have an account with their warehose in Illinois by me, so you may be able to use my company name to place the order. They're a wholesaler, so it should be cheaper than trying to buy it through a retailer.

Our underbody is actually the boards from a demolished hockey rink. Can't get any more Canadian than that! We got enough to do the car a dozen times over. Its held up really well so far but I expect some cracking over time. Thats why we collected plenty! smiling smiley

Hey I appreciate that! I'll do some calling tomorrow. Any idea what a 4x8 sheet(I have no idea what sizes it comes in...) would cost? Roughly?

I use a section of a whitewater canoe hull. It is a ABS/foam/ ABS sandwich sheet. pretty light and can be heat formed for a good fit. Darn stuff is near indestructible and has held up under the RallyTruck for almost 10 year, Yes Anders almost 10 years!

So Steve will you have this new creation at SandBlast?

Na, won't be done for sandblast. We may do sandblast with the celica depending on how sno*drift goes. Sno*drift is my favorite rally; dont really want to skip it.

I'm not sure, I've never priced anything like that through them...I just saw stuff in their warehouse that looked like it would be perfect for underbody protection. I buy corrugated plastic sheets through them for making outdoor signs.

Last time (Feb '13) I bought some from Piedmont Plastics (a wholesaler that will sell one-off sheets to mere mortals) it cost me $135 for a 4x10 sheet of 1/8" UHMW.
