hydraulic hose
January 05, 2014 02:31PM
Most folks who move the hydraulic pump (for, e.g., their center diff) also replace the hoses. Most also seem to use connectors at each end that switch from the 14mm x 1.5 inverted flare of the pump and diff to -6 AN for the flexible hose, rather than just have a hose with the required ends. Can someone please tell me why?

Simple,

Because finding -6AN fittings and hose juse about anywhere is easy.

Finding an obscure internet ordered part is much more difficult.

Order the hard adapter fittings on each end once. Then use common -6an fittings and hose to route between them. The hard adapter fittings will be bulletproof, but if the flex lines blow in just about any Rally Town USA (or Canada) you can find someone to make you a -6AN hose.

Just about every auto/truck parts store in rally towns in Canada have the parts and tools to make crimp on hydraulic hoses because dump trucks, plow trucks, log splitters, etc all use hydraulic hoses and they blow!

If i've learned anything in motorsports, if you aren't prepared to carry an exact replacement spare with you at all times, then you must use parts you can find in any Rally town. And "truck" parts stores are best...they can make hydraulic hoses, stock heavy duty heater hose, stock Rotella/Delo Oil which your rally car will probably like, good heavy duty electrical stuff, even silicone turbo/intercooler connectors!

Some places won't know about -AN stuff. But JIC #___ is the same. AN-3 and JIC #3 are basically the same thing. Slightly different tolerances/fits, but the angles and thread pitch are the same.
It's also about 1/3-1/2 the price of the fancy AN bits.

Many parts that can fix a logging truck can fix a rally car, which is great since rallies often are run on logging roads.

The trick is knowing which parts and how. Chris Martin has it pretty much figured out.
