My Galant VR4 build thread
February 19, 2014 04:25AM
So I finally got a few photos sent to me in Afghanistan, so I'm starting my build thread finally. I was able to start helping with fabricator with prep work before I deployed, and would have done more, but our supplier screwed us getting materials, big time. Can't wait to get home and help with the rest though.

So, I can't upload what's on my phone, but here's some more recent pics:

please let me know if links are broken! I actually can't view photobucket images due to "corporate settings" at work...

Thanks for your service. My Br in law's 82nd Airborne at Bragg. Pretty TIG welds. Not the tightest cage ever, but it seems all the elements are there. People like to practically have the A pillar bars touching the shell, same with the main hoop.

Stay safe.

Because it is stronger and they support each other making the 2 parts cage and shell more than the sum of the individual parts.

And better visisbility than having a GIGANTOR A PILLAR blocking a HUGE portion of the world where? Maybe right where you need to be seeing.

Also, the door opening looks to me AWFULLY SMALL.. and door bars too high---or just right for breaking ribs amybe puncturing lungs in a sideways off...
Any body here ever pucture a long wif a broken rib?

Hurts good.

Yup, I'm stationed there in Fayettenam. Really makes you appreciate just about anywhere else on earth. But I'll be damned if the job satisfaction isn't through the roof with some of the jobs available there...

thanks, I'm home in 2 weeks.

Nice to see another Galant! I had a lot of fun in that chassis on gravel. Still daily drive a vr4, good luck with the build!

I'm looking forward to it. Sadly, since my deployment took me past Sandblast, it put the GVR4 on a backburner to my Evo (which does not see dirt these days). But, as far as just being able to get on a stage, I can't see this car needing anything but safety equipment to be "ready". Skidplate, radiator, and of course restrictor are also on the shortlist.

If I'm able to get into rally, and STICK WITH IT, an Evo will probably be the next build way down the road. Beat up street cars are getting stupid cheap these days, and I know every inch of them. Unlike the VR4, where I only know the engine.

is anyone able to tell me, do I need to get the cage certified before I can paint it? I really feel I should get on prepping it and painting it so it doesn't begin to rust. The humidity is coming here in the south

thanks, I've waited too long as it is. I was worried they have to inspect welds or something

We do inspect the welds. Paint won't hide a shitty weld so you're good to go!

here's what's been holding up my Galant's progress... Evo mods.

Things should speed up this fall for the Galant.

Is that a evo engine? If so, why?

Can't imagine why.. I talked to the OP and stressed he doesn't need to worry about anything except reliability and getting the right gears---and if that means swapping the motor round for the ability to run Evo gearbox, then swap it round--I even stressed that Mistubishi could turn it 180 in essentially the same shell, so he could too..

Even cackled about how smart the exhaust manifold was on the Evo for quick replacement: 4 nuts just staring at you-1-2-3-4 and the turbo almost falls out...Service speed before streetboiz tubes..

Fat lotta good a screaming engine going to do if it falls on its face from crap ratios like Gay-lant and Evo 1,2,3 had
