Random question for my cousin...
October 09, 2007 10:57PM
If you have a Ford car, could you put a Mazda engine in it? This would be for Group 2... OR Group 5. What would you think?

Ford Aspire with a Mazda 323 turbocharged engine. Would that be group 5 legal?

been there done that!

expect i did the full 4wd conversion!

If you are even thinking about it...you must use the mazda 1.6L tranny from a GT...and i believe this requires alot of cutting. And the hydro clutch is not possible. I converted the 4wd trans to cable clutch.

also...the aspire suspension is not going to take a beating on gravel...let alone the chassis itself.

Aspire? Isn't that some shorter than short little econo shit-box?
Yeah: 1994-1997 Ford Aspire Specs & Safety
Vehicle Dimensions
Specification 2-door hatchback 4-door hatchback

Wheelbase, in. 90.7 93.9

Tell his is a silly idea, doesn't matter iof he already has the Aspire.

Get a CAR not some toy.
Short cars don't suit PNW and Canadian roads.
You Commodah is about the shortest wheelbase that you can get away with, and I keep trying to tell you: on stages like at Wild Waste, if somebody arrives with a car a bit longer like the cars i push, they'll have a stability advantage on the fast 3rd-4th-5th gear roads.

Tell him to get a car he won't outgrow.

yep...that i did.

basically a street course on ice.

very tight 90 degree corners. And we never got above 110KPH.

I wouldn't want to drive the thing fast down a gravel road.

Its not a serious idea. We were just wondering. It would be like trying to drive a go kart at 80mph, through the woods. Bad idea..

Why even ask. of course its not serious, none of this shit is serious not even the guys with giant budgets,m it's all play.
But some shit like that is so pointless and we;ll stupid that it detracts from the fun.

Why bother asking, does this place seem like where that sorta wanky wank stuff is what this forum is here for?

Well, its a rally forum, so the people here know the rule books well. It would be a good place to ask that question. I suppose I could have emailed a rally scrutineer... but come on, THAT would have been rediculous.

Tim I'm saying that you should know that that's a stupid idea and you ought to be able to tell your cousin, "Dooooood" thats stupid. The car is short the brakes are microscopic, it's cramped inside, it will be hyper twitchy at any speed above 45 on gravel, stupid stupid stupid.

You know that, you can tell him better.
How old is this cousin?

Not so stupid a question really, expecially without mentioning the car.

Suppose he really wanted to do a xratty thingy, but hated the SOHC 2.3 and wanted to "wanky wank" and put in a 13BTT? I believe that would be legal for Group 5 on either side of the border.

So the answer, I believe, to the vague question "is it legal to put a Mazda motor in a Ford", is yes. I'm not sure about group 2 though, and you aren't allowed to change the drive configuration ie. you can't make a FWD car a RWD car... supposedly. However I see randy Zimmerman did an event as RWD in his subaru... not quite sure how that worked (with Tech).

Yeah, the simple fact that it actually HAS been done before means it's not an entirely stupid question.

Plus, I'm of the opinion that there are no such thing as stupid questions.

Only stupid people who ask questions.

Once upon a time last year I put a mazda b6t from a gtx into a festiva. Its pretty much the most retarded (in a bad way) thing ever. I'm glad its not my car.

You can change drive configuration all you want (in RA rules), you just end up in open and then *gasp* wont take home a trophy!
