Harness attachment questions

Hey everyone,

I have been searching through all the posts and I have not been able to find what I am looking for. I am getting ready to install the harnesses in the car and it does not look like I am able to use the OEM mounting locations, due to both the angle and the fact they would be rubbing against the roll cage. What is the preferred mounting method. Can i mount it to the roll cage or does it have to be mounted to the body.

Shoulders to cage, lap and subs through floor with reinforcement plates. Suggest strongly eyes and clips.

Is there any specific requirement for the reinforcement place Ex. play must be so many square inches? Recommended size. I know the rules say it must be able to handle a load of 3000 lbs..

FIA rules specify plate size, something like 40 cm^2 and at least 3 mm thick (1/8".
I usually do a 2.5" square as I have lots of 2.5" strapping usually.

I thought it was 16 sq.in. For the harness points.
Definitely 1/8in thickness though.

Thank you guys, so if I were to create a mounting point where the harness is at in the picture that should work?

I'd just weld 1/8" on to the floor. Then another 1/8" perpendicular with a hole welded to that. Right where you have the harness now

Steve - Did you just make your own L bar (or angle iron as we used to call it).

More like a inverse T. The 1/8" on the floor is more spread out, the piece with the mounting hole is probably only 2x2.5" or something. Piece on the floor might be 3x3.

On my subaru, I have the seats mounted to 1.5" bars going from the sill to the tunnel, then mounts welded off of the bars so nothing is attached to the floor. That example doesn't really help in Alan's case here.

I would suggest simply using backing plates as designed, like a giant washer, and not welding them. Too much chance of weakening the floorpan at the welds.

What do you mean by backing plates? A lot of cages are welded in similar fashion to the floor. except with a 36 sq. inch requirement.

We've always built cages with mounts on multiple surfaces, e.g., horizontal and vertical and mounted to frame/unibody, not just floor. Seen too many autopowers pop through the floor.

Now that I see a picture I would follow Steve's suggestion and weld a plate on the floor and a perpendicular plate off that for the belt to actually mount on. I personally don't like to see anything bolted thru a floor just for gravel and impact damage. Yes you can teflon cover the whole underside and protect those precious thread but shit happens and teflon sheets get torn off and so on.
