excuse my ignorance, but isn't the 4.25 out of the diesel trans, and relatively plentiful?

Supposedly, but they aren't common at all....and really they are hardly worth the time and money to R&R the box strip it and install...

Do the match: 3.9 to 4.2 only shortens the final drive a little bit---about the same as the tall gravel tires gear the car UP, so you spend whatever and end up geared in effect, like a standard road car..
Nope, go for something that actually results in a NET-GAIN for the time and money spent

Gobright, you are the first person that I've heard talk negatively about this guy. I've known a few people that have used him on 020s. My friends shop uses them exclusively for VW transaxles.

What did you hear about him?

So, All that said was going to get one of These for my AGB 020. I notice now that the only shorter finals are listed for the 8V. Does that mean that I will have a problem?

The stock 16v and 8v GTI boxes that everyone uses are 3.67 so going to 4.25 is a bigger jump than you suggest but still problematic. With a 16v 5th gear (0.91) you end up with a top speed of like 130+ mph which is too high.

Looks like an AGB box is the same as a 2Y. If that is true then the diff OD / crownwheel ID is 111mm.
Are you going to be fitting an LSD? If so choose one for an 8v application with 109mm OD as most lower final drive option use that size.

I wouldn't be building a box for rally use without an LSD of some sort. The two main weaknesses of the standard 020 box are the original / crownwheel rivets failing and the planet and sun gears falling to bits, both result in a fooked box and an expensive DNF.
One DNF costs the same as an LSD....

My memory may be inncorect but I thought all the VW fan-boi types always blab about their "close ratio" was this

3.67 is even worse....

Looks like the shorter the better if retaining stock overdriven 5th..

Memory still working ok there John. thumbs up

The term "close ratio" is commonly used in VW circles to identify the oem GTI gear set, as opposed to the oem "wide ratio" gear set used in less sporty shopping car models. It is not being used in a "motorsport close ratio" sense.
Both those close and wide ratio gear sets are listed in the quoted box in your post. However there are a few alternate ratios in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears but 1st is always 3.45 and 5th no lower than 0.91 in oem gears.

The 3.89 final drive was fitted to some mk1 Golf / Rabbits and that gearbox casing does not have the mounting bosses cast into it to attach a mk2 / 3 rear gearbox mount to the diff casing. And that type of casing will also not accept 100mm inner CVs.

FWIW, I picked up a 4.46 FD (for an 8V) box this summer - 290 euros (180 for the FD - 110 for shipping) from MTS - well worth it (Kaaz, too but not from MTS).

Other bit of kit worth thinking about: http://www.usrallyteam.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=13_34&products_id=1763 - let's you actually tell what gear you are in...

The car had a AGB with a quaife, but then popped a bit of aluminum off the case and a ton of oil into the clutch...

With the help of Kurt, we now know just about the whole gearbox is trash but the quaife. So the idea was to swap that and a better final into another AGB that he has to offer.

I'm nervous because the internet calls that box '16V'. But the internet also says the input shaft is a size it wasn't (as we dealt with earlier getting a clutch, John)

And seeing what the cost of getting a bit of gear over here, I guess I just wanted to run it past the guru's.

So AGB is 22mm input, not 24mm?

I'm partial to the AUG myself, I think the 1.94 2nd and 1.44 3rd gives you the smallest gap on your most common shift.

Plus it's 8v trans, so works with all the FDs that seem to be the easiest to get.

Thanks Chad, was just on the phone with Bob trying to straighten him out on all the choces--not so easy when I never built one of these...
At least I assured him that those overseas 4.86 things aren't gonna be some gigantor headache and it made me remember that guy "Brokenvw"

John, looks like MTS agrees:

"020 8V ring and pinion set will fit to your transmission!!!

But notice

In case you`ve got the "16V" type , you only have to change the fourth fixed gear , and go on like at standard rebuilding ."
