FS: 16" Wheels with Gravel Rally Tires
August 21, 2015 12:16PM
Hi,
We used these for recce at 3 Rally America events.
They were fitted to do the recce and taken right back off.
Tire wear is minimal and one tire has never been used.

Wheels are Enkei EDR9 in 16" X 7", 5X100 PCD with a 45mm offset, in black.
Tires are Max Sport RB3 in Medium compound in size 205/55/16

These were fit to a stock Subaru XV Crosstrek and should fit any 5X100 Subaru with front calipers that will clear.

The tires came from Demon Tweeks, more info here: http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/motors...sport-rb3-tyre
Wheels came from Tirerack, more info here: http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/Wheel...=Black+Painted

We have 5 and would like to sell together.
$900 for the set. Cost to buy new was ~$1580
Can be picked up in VT or will ship.

I think these are the Dot "cheater" tire that creayed so much ruckus at rallycross nationals.

The letters "DOT" are molded into the sidewall, but I don't think it would stand up in a court of law.
The description on Demon Tweeks site expressly says that these are not DOT approved.

Indysport has it to, but no DOT number stamped into it. I am sure the SCCA nerds are still debating it.

Yup.

Oddly enough, snow tires were faster than rally tires anyway...

No we're not... we ruled that the markings are inconsistent with the US DOT standardized markings per regulation (numbers chapter verse whatever... don't have my notes) and as such we could not determine conclusively that they were, in fact, DOT approved tires. (Interestingly, the Maxsport website crashed that weekend... hmm...) MAXXIS and Falken rally tires are/were DOT legal and have the appropriate markings, in fact the Falkens I used to have actually had the UTQG ratings moulded in (treadwear 50, traction C, temperature C) whereas the MAXXIS do not.

Short version is they have "DOT" stamped in the sidewall, but in a way that is inconsistent with US regulations, in such a way that it was inconclusive that they were street legal in the US.

Funny story about the Indy Sports... it became a "thing" for people to wander over to Warren Elliot's trailer and stick their finger in the tread of his new muds. The last time I saw tires that gooshy soft were... hmm... Warren's set of Colway rallycross tires.

- One a' them SCCA nerds who had to deal with it (and missed out on a lot of Saturday fun because of it... oh well!)

The IndySport SG tires are awesomely soft and lasting longer than I expected them too.

We're the Maxsports slower or just the driver slower?

Nerd. winking smiley

Unsure. I was in a Stock-legal 2.5RS in a higher class and threw a set of borrowed Lassas on for one heat. The car seemed to have a little more lateral grip but this was greatly offset by the car just about completely failing to accelerate after shifting out of First. The car, she no go anymore.

If the surface was looser or the ground flatter then they may have been an advantage. Or if the car had 300hp instead of 160. Maybe if the rally tires were little 175 width 62cm high tires (like the car owner's other car, a highly overpowered Miata, wears...) instead of 195/65s then it wouldn't have been nearly as bad.

Lassa tires are crazy heavy too!
From a rallycross perspective, the lighter weight and softer compound of retreads is beneficial. We are going to do back to back testing some day.
