1996 BMW E36 Rally Car For Sale
January 07, 2016 01:23PM
I was hoping I could find a home for it in Colorado so we could boost CHCA car counts by 1 next summer, but nobody's ready to buy. According to some posts on FB yesterday, this is one of only two or three Group 2 cars to crack the 70mpg stage average at a RA national event. So...be that guy that gets a stage tossed...or not! smileys with beer

I bought the car in 2013 as an automatic and converted it to a 5-speed. That year we ran Ojibwe with the car. Unfortunately we suffered the effects of the dreaded oil-pump-nut failure, and melted down the bearings before pulling off to the road (driver error). A new-to-me 2.8L engine was sourced and the M3 cams were swapped over. We made sure to pull the oil pan and tack the oil pump nut in place so that issue should not be a problem with the new motor.

We ran the car at 100 AW in 2014 and finished 3rd and 1st on the two days in the regional G2 class and at some point over the weekend blew out the AVO shocks in the rear. Those have been replaced with Bilstein HD shocks.

The car was rented for the PPIHC 2014 and ran in the exhibition class, finishing every practice run, and making the summit on race day for an epic marriage proposal. The car still sports the base white wrap, but most of the sponsor decals have been removed. The paint underneath is still red, but the hood/trunk and front bumper are black and dark grey, respectively.

During PPIHC race week the car developed a misfire and we threw a bunch of parts trying to sort out the issue. New plugs, new Bosch coil-packs (~$550 for all 6), extra grounds on the coil packs, you name it. We didn't have much luck, so we took it to the local BMW dealership for a once-over. They suspected a bad head, so that was replaced after the race. None of these changes solved the issue, so I decided to try replacing the ECU. With the new ECU the misfire has disappeared and the car seems back in top form, pulling strong all the way up to 7k.

Currently the car is setup for winter fun with some really soft old OEM front suspension. My plan was to sell the car with the 40mm JVAB fronts, but if the buyer wishes, I can lower the price and include a set of Bilstein HD fronts instead.

Here's the specs:

Safety
• Safety Devices roll cage (has run at Rally America, NASA, CHCA, & PPIHC)
• Sabelt FIA Approved Seats
• Sabelt FIA Approved Belts (expire at the end of 2016)
• 2 hand held fire extinguishers

Engine/Fuel System
• M52 2.8L from a 1998 528
• M3 Cams
• M50 intake manifold
• Intake with heat shield
• Header-back exhaust
• Re-flashed ECU, should be @220hp
• Oil-pump nut welded
• Mishimoto aluminum radiator
• Mishimoto silicone radiator hoses
• AKG bolt-through urethane engine mounts
• ATL Fuel Cell with swirl pot
• Porsche 928 fuel pump
• Stainless braided fuel lines (run inside, not under the car)
• Adjustable fuel pressure regulator with gauge
• New Bosch coil-packs

Drivetrain
• ZF 5-speed
• 14 lbs lightweight chromoly flywheel
• Stage 2 carbon/kevlar clutch
• 4.45 ratio limited-slip differential
• AKG bolt-thru urethane transmission mounts
• AKG DTM Shifter
• AKG dual shear shift selector rod

Brakes
• 328 calipers
• ATE discs front, drilled discs rear
• Porterfield R4 brake pads
• Stainless brake lines
• ABS system removed, plumbed with junction near shifter so you could add a hydraulic handbrake. . .but its RWD. . .you can just stand on the throttle or clutch kick it.

Suspension
• JVAB 40mm Bilsteins with 300 lbs springs
• Bilstein HD rear shocks with convertible springs (higher rates than what this model normally has)
• Front control arms replaced within last 1000 miles
• Rear bushings replaced within last 1000 miles
• Strut bars front & rear
• OEM sway bars included, but not currently mounted

Body
• Light pod with 4 PIAA lights with quick disconnect
• Rally.Build heavy duty skidplate
• Lightened hood (with vents) and trunk
• Fender flares
• Aluminum floor panels & navvie foot plate

Other
• Z3 steering rack -- 2.7 turns lock-to-lock
• Aluminum steering wheel
• VDO gauges (water temp, oil pressure, volts, fuel level)
• Map light on adjustable arm for navvie
• 8 matching BMW 15x7" alloy wheels, 5 or 6 have rally tires with good tread

Asking $12,500 with the front JVABs, would drop the price $1k and include the dark blue Bilsteins (HDs from overseas?) in their place if the buyer prefers.

Thanks for looking!

Bump! Someone needs to add some RWD fun to their stable, it's sad seeing this at my shop sitting and not flying around sideways.
