1988 Toyota 4Runner

OK, not very Rally related, but I did drive it to STPR last year! However, too many projects, decided we were better off with another Subaru wagon than me trying to fix this up in the middle of winter.

Here it is for your review:



1988 Toyota 4Runner

99,900 miles. Gray with black roof, 22R-E, 5-speed, 4wd. $1200/bo

The Good:

Low Miles for year, new front fenders, recent tires. Mobil 1 since 70k miles, Bilstein shocks, passed NH inspection 11/06 (at 97k miles).

The Bad:

Clutch slipping. Unexplained coolant loss. If I didn’t have two other project cars, I’d change the clutch and then also tackle the radiator (looks to be original 18 year old unit), water pump, timing gear and the headgasket. This is the base model 4Runner. No tach, no AC, crank-up windows (except for rear gate).

The Ugly:

Rear quarter panels were repaired just before I bought it, there is some bubbling there, so I’m sure the bondo will eventually loosen up. The tailgate has some small rust holes in the bottom, could use some TLC. That said, the body is still better than just about any one that I’ve seen. Frame is still decent, too.

This could make a great off-road rig with a live axle front suspension, and I know where there is one that may be available. With a few weekends worth of work, it could be a good reliable machine for another 99k miles. You could also use this as the base of a frame off restoration while it’s still pretty nice. Only 6 more years until it’s an “antique auto” in NH!

Doesn't it have fresh snow tires?

Factory installed rollover protection, RNY legal. Stock fuel tank so you don't need to build RA box around cell.

I can't beleive you put Mobil 1 in that POS!

Tedneck, clearly you're not taking the upbrining of your nephews seriously. If you were you would realize that they are fast approaching the "steal uncles truck for a beatrun to the top of the local 4-wheel trail" age. YOU should buy this, parade it around in front of them as the "worlds most capable off-road vehicle" and throw in that "even a boy could drive it." Then park it in the dooryard with the keys in it and ask them to come feed Piper while you're away.

They've got to be wise on the whole sled thing and looking for safer ways to flex their adrenal gland with you droppn'SkiDoo's on your melon every other time out.

Nephew Alex whacked two trees with Lisey's sled on Pinnacle Mtn, Sunday. Does that count? The first one he just grazed. The second tree threw him good and punched in the nose cone. I don't let him use my helmet. Chryst, I could have died laughing. Then, I taught him how to launch some stone wall jumps. I broke the front bumper on mine hitting a stop sign. I guess the sign almost worked.

I think my moron sister Talie will buy him some brand new "upscale" SUV thing to get laid in and then ruin next year. "What does Consumer Reports think of those new H3s?" "Can you order them in with Tuscan accent interiors and extra cookie holders?" I can hear it all now. I am afraid that if we leave the Runnah there, I will end up working on it.

Andrew, maybe you could barter it for some baby sitting and write it off as a donation.

I have a guy in Washington state interested in the 4Runner, hence JV's comment about towing his car out with it...he must have missed the slipping clutch part of my ad.

Sounds like loads of sledneck fun, I'm starting to feel human again, duct tape that front cover back on the crappy cougar!

The actual clutch job would be cake, it's the 19-year old bolts holding everything together that would take all the time. I would budget 3 cans of PB Blaster, two acetelyne tanks, seventeen drill bits, a tap set, and 8 trips to Fastenal for new bolts. If I wanted to fix it, I wouldn't be selling it!

And in terms of cost...without the clutch, you've got $100 to rig some sort of hitch ($200 for one that actually fits, plus rigging up lights, which requires some sort of adapter gizmo), U-haul wants $454 (plus damage waiver) for a dolly, or you have to buy used, and 220 gallons of gas to tow cross country at about 15 mpg is $480. Plus a week of time out and back (in total Mad Max death ride mode, not a leisurely run). Putting car on tractor trailer is under $1300.

JV, I service for the Podrive Subaru...we do a transmission swap in 17 HOURS (and a couple racks of Labatts), we leave the 17 minute swaps to the pros.
