Anti/ProSquat values on 4 link suspension - Rally & Rallycross (no replies)

Hi all and thanks for letting a Finn join your forum, our BBS culture is pretty much dead in Finland unfortunately and there's not much sharing anyways about these kind of stuff.

I've been trying to gather information on anti/prosquat values from different appliances regarding 4 link rear suspension setups. The literature around the subject is bang on rally secrecy and I'm trying to wrap my head around where to start planning the geometry. I understand the concept itself, but trying to apply the theory to practice appears to be different story.

The car is K11 micra converted RWD (dont ask :spin:) powered with Ford OHC and T9 transmission. Front suspension is derived from starlet/micra with bilstein shocks. Rear end is 1031 from 240 volvo, dana lsd and currently in the making regarding suspension. Will be used on loose gravel / ice, but occasional tarmac is not outruled since some of the folk tracks has sections of tarmac.

To the subject:

Rally anarchy sticky is good bit of knowledge. I've been looking in to different ready made 4 link sets and the suggested values for the link lengths puts the setup range roughly from 0% antisquat to -200% prosquat depending on the rig and set.

Latelly in rallycross and folk racing there has been 3 different cults how to setup the cars:

1. Near 100% Antisquat i.e. the rear end is neutral upon launch:

2. Over 100% Antisquat i.e. the rear end lifts the chassis heavily upon launch:
https://youtube.com/shorts/4zEXNya_ajg?si=X0ncPzZlmiAu-vK4

3. Pro squat i.e. the rear end sinks heavily during acceleration:

?t=30

The questions & thoughts:

Every setup has it's pros and cons (any thoughts?) and benefit to different driving styles (which benefits which?) but I'm having hard times to apply these pros and cons in my own plans.

What comes to 4 link setup, most of the subjects are about which setup launches the car best from the line, but barely none talks how different setups affects on the first corner and aid different driving styles in entry, mid and exit of the corner not to mention how the different style of setup affects the spring rates and damping values etc.

Sorry if I posted this to wrong subforum, but I didn't find a separate tech section. There's lots of secrecy around the subject and I'm trying to join together all bits and pieces of this very scattered subject and share it with everyone after I've applied the science to my own testings.

Please join in, the word is free and I opened this topic mostly for sharing your knowledge and mine. My history is on track, tarmac and with FWD so needless to say I'm bit in the woods atm.

How to get an engine ecu to control a rwd auto transmission tcm? (4 replies)

Hi I'm looking at either a 1.4t from a Chevy cruze or a 1.6t from a Ford fiesta st. I'm having trouble figuring out how I can get a rwd automatic to work between the ecu and tcm.

I know it would be alot easier to use a manual transmission but I have hip issues so can't use a clutch anymore. I've looked at older 4l40 for my car under 2000 lbs but it might be better to use a 4l60 because I'm going to tune whatever engine to atleast 250hp. The 5l40e looks good but my ultimate goal is a 6l45 from a cadillac cts. I'd love to drop in the 2.0t ltg from one to make it easier but I can't seem to find if the motor is the same width and height as the smaller brother 1.4t. The pontiac solstice seems to be with the 2.0t lnf engine, though it's very hard to find a motor and transmission for a decent price.

Anyway if anyone knows if the ecu can work with a different tcu that didn't come in the car or if there is a way to get them to.

There are some guys that are trying to hack it to use a different transmission, so I am sure there must be a way since a gm ecu and gm fwd or rwd all uses the same software. The only thing that might be a problem, the drivers might need loading from a cadillac ecu into the cruze's ecu.

If anyone knows anything or can suggest a person or company that can do this, please chime in. Here in Canada, there isn't anyone that understands enough about how the tcu and ecm works. What i understand, the ecu has the shift points and tells the tcu when, then the tcu does its thing controlling the transmission. I might be wrong though, lol

Heard there were some rx7 legends on here and was hoping to get some info!

Unfortunately most of the threads I've been reading are 10+ years old and some pretty full on builds. Most are missing photos and probably more serious than ik looking to get right away.

I just purchased a 1987 RX7 with an ns5.0 swap that's almost complete. It's running but needs some final assembly. it's relatively stock, some headers and some tuning software. Should be putting out around 210 at the crank.

I'm looking to get this running pretty quick and race it in a few localish rallyx races in British Columbia Canada. Some in Pemberton and some in the interior. All timed so no cages necessary.

Looking to get some info on any must dos before hitting the dirt. Anything that need welding reinforcing or some cheap quick mods that will keep this thing in one piece!

Also looking for info on some springs and shocks that may give me a little more clearance without breaking the bank.

I basically want to get in and run the car see what I like and don't and maybe get more serious next year. Or maybe just keep it cheap and fun!

The car is currently on the original 4 bolt hubs but it's come with parts to swap to 5 bolt with stainless lines so I'll likely do this pretty quickly.

2018 Crosstrek - Subaru Canada Rocket Rally Team Build (no replies)

90% of R5 performance at 25% the Price

Initially built in 2018 as the first of a series of 5 cars built by Rocket Rally (at the time also running Subaru Canada's rally team), the intention was to deliver performance similar to and/or close to the top-spec cars in the championship at the time at a fraction of the cost. This was the first in the series and has featured a number of upgrades to keep it up to the current spec of the last cars built and is in the fact the most optioned of all the Crosstreks built by Rocket Rally.

Featuring a full build from new stripped chassis and up.

This car is a guaranteed podium finishers in the right hands, and this one and its' sister cars have finished on the overall podium several times (Canada and the USA) and won national rallies outright in Canada. Not for a beginner, this is for experienced drivers who want to step up from basic builds but don’t want to invest 350k + into an R5 car.

Note: car also includes full 80L FIA fuel cell (option on this series) which has been test fitted but not fully plumbed. Car also has light body damage on a-pillar which was not repaired (not functionally a problem, just cosmetic), and is pre-wired / includes full suite of rally lights.

Additional things of note are full underbody protection, roof vent, motorsport steering wheel, seats, belts, etc. everything needed to pass technical inspection.

•	Rally spec high compression 2.0/2.2 engine with Garrett Motorsports Turbo
•	Front mounted intercooler
•	Custom radiator pack
•	Reservoir tank
•	Full engine bay MIL-spec wiring harness (new)
•	Motorsport loom connectors and sub-connectors
•	Engine oil cooler and dedicated fan
•	Electric driver-adjustable power steering
•	Quick rack
•	Plumbed and wired for by-pass anti-lag (now banned)
Full 3" exhaust including oval low clearance / equal volume sections (new one needs fitting see below)
JDM 2.0L heads with rally cams and fully functioning AVCS
•	Upgraded oil pump
•	Baffled sump
•	Rocket spec bottom end
•	Had regularly run up to 2.5bar boost pressure / 3.5bar absolute (has been adjusted since to meet current rally regulations)
•	Tuned to run on VP109 or Elf PerfoMax 105 using a Motec M150 ECU
•	ECU is fully unlocked and features a "Development License", allowing future firmware changes from suitable Motec dealers.
•	Functioning features include Launch Control, Anti-Lag, Flat Shift, etc. etc. pre-wired for active Lambda sensors and additional sensors for tuning (if desired, for example EGT etc.)
•	Fully seperated Gearbox loom on a motorsport connector
•	Front chassis harness on motorsport connector
•	All going to an integrated Motec PDM and keypad which also attached to the interior chassis harness (all new since last rally).
•	Gearbox is a PPG 6speed sequential, electronic center diff with upgraded clutch packs and coils and internal wiring, with STI motorsport fully ramp and way adjustable front and rear diffs (CUSCO) - can be modified for 1-way, 1.5-way and 2-way (currently setup as used by Antoine L'Estage / Brandon Semenuk in the SRTC and sister Crosstreks)
•	Diff maps selectable from the Motec keypad as well as adjustable from the unlocked Motec M150 ECU.
o	Can be upgraded to "high current" diff with a Motec DHB (only necessary if current lock levels / current are insufficient for given driver or if front and rear diffs are "loosened up").
•	Heavy duty front and rear driveshaft/CV joints, using modified Group N uprights with full AP VO brake kit (currently in gravel spec) with Performance Friction pads.
•	Includes adjustable brake proportioning valve and bias adjustment, plus custom M/C setup and spacer (additional option vs. the other Crosstreks).
•	Full stainless brake lines throughout with plumbed in hydraulic handbrake and seperate lines on each corner.
•	Suspension is Exe-TC "R4 long" gravel spec with custom top hats (upgradeable to the full long travel suspension equal as on Antoine's car but not really necessary).
•	Includes aluminum front control arms with Motorsport spherical bearings, "zero bump steer" rear arms including modified trailing, toe link and lateral links (possibly considered "R-A Super Production" legal at the time as it did not alter mounting points per se, however the cantilevered design effectively meant longer arms connected to the original OE subframe. Subframes have steel inserts, all chassis suspension points fully bobbined and welded top and bottom with solid threaded 4130 inserts.
•	Pre-wired for Stilo, Rally Safe, Boost Inspection / Recording device, as well as including a lightweight battery in mount box (behind driver's seat), plumbed in fire supression (might need re-certification) and hand bottles as well as tire kit all on carbon floor panels, with hydraulic jack and spare changing setup in rear.

Total package including Fuel Cell $87,500CAD

After going through this and a few other forums for rally racing (the ones that are active at least) I figured this would be the best place for advice on how to get into rally racing, and the most realistic when it comes to harsh truths and whatnot. I've been wanting to get into rally racing for a little while now, and was wondering where I could go/what I could do to get started rallying. After looking at a few other posts in this forum i'm basically digging myself a grave by saying this but I have no idea about anything when it comes to cars in the mechanical sense, meaning I have no idea what to look for in terms of specs when it comes to finding a car to buy to get into the hobby. So if anyone has any good recommendations of a good program or something I can go through but also anything I can research or do to learn about car mechanics and how I could learn enough to work on a project car instead of buying an ARA ready car, as well as how to get into rally racing itself and start going to events and learn everything about how it all goes down.

I have a Merkur project ready for a new home. Not sure how much traffic this forum gets anymore, I'll add more details if anyone is interested.

Caged shell with engine mounted. Lots of bits and pieces including JVAB suspenders up front and parts he recommended. Also 89 daily driver that's in ok shape for the age.

Had hoped to get back to it after raising my kid but that's unlikely so hopefully someone can have fun building up this icon of a car.

This is the ex-Deaton/Deffenbaugh 1993 Honda Civic stage rally car that I purchased in 2018. It has a lot of great parts, plenty of spares, and (as far as I know) still holds the G2 record at STPR on SS10/Cedar. The car has competed in 18 events total (both rallies and hillclimbs), and it’s last event was Sandblast 2017 where it placed 3rd in class (O2L).

It’s time to face reality – I don’t have the time and space to finish this project. I’d like to send this one on to someone who can build it and put it back on the podium where it belongs. Please note – the pictures shown should be considered the “before” and/or glamour shots. It is a disassembled rolling shell at this point and will need reassembly with the included parts to run/compete. Bring a trailer and large, empty truck for all the spares!

Car spec includes:

Chassis -

Fully caged and NASA logbooked in June 2009

HotBits DT2 shocks with zero miles on full rebuild by Peter at Hotbits Canada

Brand new Eibach 60mm coilover springs – 11.8” Length – 342# front, 228# rear

Brand new strut mounts, bushings, etc

Brand new front and rear control arms, ball joints, bushings, and wheel bearings with zero miles

Good spares of many suspension parts, including spindles

Approximately 2,100# wet with a 200hp H22 drivetrain

Clean and clear title in hand and in my name

Drivetrain -

JDM H22A with fresh timing belt, water pump, and tensioner

USDM H22A1 for parts (good head for rebuild, accessories, etc) – broken rear motor mount casting on engine block

JDM Accord Si-R T2W4 transmission with OEM helical LSD

USDM Prelude M2S4 transmission with KAAZ clutch LSD (needs 2nd gear synchro)

USDM Prelude M2F4 transmission with open diff (cracked case - for parts)

Hasport H22 swap kit with brand new bushings and Driveshaft Swap axles

Brand new Rywire H22 Mil-Spec engine to ECU harness

Fidanza aluminum flywheel with ACT HD clutch

Chipped P29 ECU

Stainless steel header, “cat”, and stainless steel exhaust

Spares include brand new distributor, numerous uninstalled gaskets, alternator, brand new oil pan, etc

Brakes -

1995 Accord front calipers and rear disc conversion with 1995 Integra calipers

Two sets of brand new Hawk HPS pads front and rear (plus the used set in the calipers)

Hydraulic handbrake

Other -

¼” aluminum skidplate that covers wheel to wheel and one foot behind engine/transmission

Brantz International 2S rally computer

Sparco driver and co-driver seats

Sparco steering wheel with removable hub

Four “old school” Hella 5000 halogen lights in a fiberglass pod

A gaggle of 15” 4x100 wheels and assorted tires....

Qty 6 – unknown model wheels (shown on car) with used 185/65-15 Maxxis rally tires

Qty 8 – EP Civic Si wheels with various tires

Qty 4 – MINI “Bottlecap” wheels with all-season street tires

Rear-mounted battery conversion (Optima Red Top may need to be replaced, but included)

Dual helmet box, toolbox, safety kit, fire extinguishers, etc

Brand new aftermarket rear bumper cover

Any Honda and/or rally spares I can lay hands on go with it – there’s more I’m forgetting

A thick stack of notes, receipts, part numbers, etc from both myself and the prior owner

So, what’s it need?

Installation of the drivetrain

Clean up and sorting of the wiring….it was running as-is, but there are bare-wire splices from prior owners and field fixes that give me shudders. A weekend spent cleaning up the wiring with terminated ends heat shrink, etc would be time well spent. Any minor wiring issues make me twitch uncontrollably...YMMV.

Repair or rebuild of inner end of CV axle – passenger inner joint separated when removing from transmission. I was going to get a set of Raxles for $400 and keep these for spares.
Front fenders, hood, and front bumper cover - $2-300 for brand new parts; less if you go with junkyard/used parts.

Cut-off switch installation per ARA rules. I believe I have a new Speedway/Ron Francis cutoff switch I’ll throw in...it was originally wired with a Hella removable cut-off switch as the “key”.

Fire suppression system per ARA rules.

General feedback from current rally competitors is the cage should be good as-is, but may need a bar or two. I can provide detailed pics for interested parties, but it will take a bit to get the car out of storage.

Harnesses are expired and will need to be replaced.

I’d throw a lick of paint on it and make it look nice, but that’s me.

Including the original price of the car, I have well over $10,000 invested. It’s easily worth that or more in finished and running condition, but I can’t seem to find the time to get it done. Consider this a DIY rally car kit with “some assembly required”. I’m asking $4,500 or reasonable offer for everything listed above, but am also open to interesting vehicular trades (no projects please), including trades that would require money on my side. While it would be more lucrative, I’m not interested in parting the car out. The car is located in a suburb of Rochester, NY.

Oil breather question that might be dumb. (no replies)

I see so many car fires at events I go to that I'm trying to do what I can during my engine swap to prevent them. so far I have pretty much all the flammable plumbing on the intake side of the engine away from the exhaust heat. At sandblast rally a couple weeks ago there was a fire where the car had rolled on its side and something was getting on the header. It got me thinking about my oil breather that I still need to build. I was going to use one of the little aluminum cans with a filter on top and it fits best on the exhaust side of the engine. But now I'm gonna move it away from there and wondering if I just put a draft tube on it with a u at the top if that would be smarter to help prevent oil from gushing out if the thing is on its side or upside down. I could locate the tank on one side of the engine and the draft tube on the other so it wouldn't leak when rolled on either side of the car. I'm probably just being anal but I'd prefer not to burn my car down or myself and co-driver wife.

Anybody else have any better ideas? Maybe there's a check valve or pcv that could go in the line to prevent oil from just flowing out of it?

Like I said probably a dumb question.

By the way this is the old black and red xr4ti that has been posted on here about for last 15 years. We raced it back in August and had engine issues so I put a 2.5L Duratec in it with a turbo. It should see another event this summer.
