didn't get a good chance to look at what he had done. figure he was running mostly 1-3mph/stage faster on average than we were.

rough is relative but it only took a couple good hits at speed to do some damage. we managed to make it through without any real drama. Only changed one wheel all weekend since it was bent a little more than I was comfortable with and we had a ton of time at the turn around. car needs a few control arm bushings and a new center section for the exhaust thanks to the soft fill from fridays stages.

Big plus of the weekend was the new grading on the middle dam transit section. it was ugly the year before.

Ted and Keith - not rough? - did you drive the southern and eastern loops of the Middle Dam stages? Most of the stages were nice, but there were sections that were old school - POR type rough. You could avoid most of the rocks, but it seemed like a rallycross with all the dodging around orange objects in the road I was doing at times. :eyeroll:

Quote

Rexie ol chum, I don't know if the roads were rougher than the 3 times I did Maine as a National, don't see how the would be but I didn't think they were unusually rougher than PNW roads, it seems s-e-e-m-s every area wants to claim to be or have ROUGH roads and "the fastest drivers"...
I enjoyed the hell out of the roads, not so abrasive to the tires like the igneous rock we have out here.

Quote

NEFR was a shakedown for us - went into it with that attitude, finished the event, and came out with some lessons learned about the new car.

Yeah, I built one out of t semi-truck step (ya know to climb up into the cab).
Nice perforated aluminum designed for grip.
My old Saab doesn't have a tunnel and I have had the old Original Dave Clark's size 14 Doc marten's boots mashing the gas down from terror before--which didn't help.
Get a foot rest, mount Odo remote zero and a intermittant wash/squirt so when you spoooolshie thru some fawkin lake and can seat a thing , you far ahead looking Kau-draiver who noticed the huge puddle will have already mashed the wipers on---they're so thoughtful.
I haz ceiling cat staring at 4.3 ratio Toiletta Stuprah diffs, and 4.3 is all intended to help in the higher gears--more yank in 3rd and 4th.
And mounting kits.

Quote

7. Need real rally wheels...

What I said was the roads weren't THAT rough.
I recced everything (from the back seat of a forrester) but only ran the Friday stages and one and a half corners on Saturday. It was my first time at NEFR so I'm not sure which stages were the middle dam stages. In any case... Yes, there were rough sections. Rougher than most of the roads I regularly run. But not the roughest I've run and certainly didn't live up to the expectation that was set out by the cautionary tales.
I thought the roads were fairly smooth and in relatively good shape other than a few sections that were bad. (some of the transits were the worst part actually)
Like you say, when it got rough it was all about picking your line through the rough stuff. A couple of areas were definitely about picking the lesser of two evils.

Martin,

#1. Good showing at NEFR.

#2. it is probably the 40mm. I don't imaging your car is that light, and i know first hard you peddle that thing. Back when i built/serviced on Narini's Legacy, they just started bending the 40mm's because they started going faster. Just around the same time John started the 50's, went to them, and i don't think we bent an insert aside from bending other stuff.

Are you bending the inserts at the top weld in "pin" area? or are you bending the 40mm "shaft"? I assume it's the 40mm part because you mention they are siezing up when they do so. if that's the case the 40mm ain't strong enough.

I don't think your habbit for jumping is the problem, cause the insert would be all the way down in the tube, supported by the bushings etc when you land. I think it's the sideloads on the inserts that happen when you toss the car hard into ruts, or hit a really sharp bump, etc.

Hi Chris, Thanks for noticing!

I oinly usually bend the pins if I bend something else like a lower control arm. This time, and at Black Bear, and most other times I bend teh 40mm tube... I don't remember any special moment... just suddenly it was bent and we were surfing the skid plate. i'll nee dto get teh bent one off, taken apart, and take a look... one possibility I thougt of was that teh lower bushing pushed down.

I think you're right, we're going faster and need the heavier duty 50mm stuff... Just need to find the money :(

Well prior to Maine I had some bent rears off both Mark Piatkowski and Kevin Turner's Subies... both had about 5-8mm bend or bow and that'll certainly jam things up, and then THAT well be more reason to bend..

Mark had bent his ears badly as well which make me say "Jeeebus' cause they're 3/16" plate....
I made jigs, wide aluminum supports to lay the tubes on and another one to press with---just like years ago when we last had 40mm forks on bikes---and they straightened nicely, stroked fine--and now I just got an email from Mark who was angry that said the "suspension just collapsed".

Not sure what he means but we need to find out what the deal is....

And a note please: When sending things for repair or service, please send just the inserts and if needed, the lower tubes.
Don't send nuts, spacers, washers and springs. I don't want to keep track of what came and what has to go back, and the springs just adds a LOT of un-needed weight---and that means costs when shipping back---and a LOT of cost when time is tight and the things need to be sent 2 day UPS.

Marks cost $100 MORE to send this time than when they were sent 3 day 15 months prior....

Let's see what we know:
- I like to jump long and high
- I don't like to lift when it gets rough
- I've bent about 10 x 40mm inserts now
Maybe it's time to upgrade to 50mm fronts?

Quote
john vanlandingham

Quote
fiasco
The RallyHo Saab popped a hose, then a headgasket on Friday. Found a random guy in service who knew a guy in town who knew Saabs, so we raced over there, and while he didn't have the headgasket we needed (2.1 liter out of a 93 900 convertible), he did have a list of every Saab and import parts department in Maine right there, so Mike's brother David worked the phones and found one.

Drove to Portland to get the gasket set from beside the dumpster at the parts store after hours, came back about 10 pm to the head off the car, crew installed the gasket (I mostly drank beer and threw tools...I know my talents), and at about 2am Brett and I took it for a beat run. Yep it ran, seemed fine...guess we'll try it.

Saturday, car overheated again (shocker, I know, especially since we had to reuse the head bolts and who knows how straight the head was at this point). In addition, a transmission cooler line came loose, melted on the header pipe, and the transmission fluid pump then acted as a flame thrower under the hood. Fortunately, shutting off the car and dumping both fire bottles into it put out the blaze, but that was it for the weekend.

Chevalier and Moody had a good time destroying most of the stock XR4 wheels I sold him last year...but the car held together fine and the JVAB suspenders did a great job.

Quote from the press notes: "-Tim Chevalier and Alan Moody broke another rim and bent three more, so they are ready to toss the stock Merkur XR4ti rims and try something else. They said the John Vanlandingham suspension worked extremely well in the rough conditions."

Sounds like somebody better finger out some headbolts or studs that are reusable....let me stink, let me.....M12 x 1.75, where would we find some M12 x 1.75..
Who would have some???

Could it be SATAN????

And what the hell sorta lousy Fraud wheels to you unlaod on the poor guy Andrew??

Something wrong with Saab 9000 wheels? Which aren't so strong but only bend--as far as i know...

Where could one find 9000 wheels??

I did some baseline testing last weekend and it ran fine but the mix needed work and just wanted to run what I knew for Maine. Just didn't have the time to play around with the maps.

Sounds like somebody better finger out some headbolts or studs that are reusable....let me stink, let me.....M12 x 1.75, where would we find some M12 x 1.75..
Who would have some???
Could it be SATAN????
Well, if you play the words John Vanlandingham backwards, it says "master of the beasts". :P

And what the hell sorta lousy Fraud wheels to you unlaod on the poor guy Andrew??

They were stock 87 XR4 wheels, which make most people vomit anyway, so most would see it as a good thing that they were reduced to scrap alloy. He also has 4 Ex-squirt GT wheels. When I sold him some (and gave him more), I was under the impression that he was going to rallycross the car for a while, not cage it a few months later...

Something wrong with Saab 9000 wheels? Which aren't so strong but only bend--as far as i know...

Quote
