Small world... kinda.
I was out volunteering at the Pacific Forest Rally and in my travels noticed a caged white XR4Ti on a property near one of the stages.

I carried on, but stopped for a closer look during the rally day, and noticed someone having a smoke so I went to ask him about the car.

This led to that... then this:

Me: By the way, my name is Keith
Him: Morison?
Me: Yup... and you?
Him: Skye...

Was great to meet you Skye... only later did I start to wonder if that is where the server resides and thought I should have gotten a selfie with it if it was.

John Lane owes me $4800 for items he wrongfully sold to another member (1 reply)

Poll: Should John Lane pay me for the items he sold?

I decided to tell you all a story about my dealings with John Lane over what was supposed to be a simple TurboBricks experience. If you have done business with John Lane in the past and you are happy, I am happy for you and do want to call out that my dealing with John Lane has been more of an edge case than any.

This started a few years ago after working out an engine build with JVAB. John V. has been very helpful with identifying the goals I had in mind for a future Volvo 240. John built me a beautiful motor that was to be the power plant for this project.

Along the way, I engaged John Lane after drooling over the fire breathing monster. John Lane had pointed out that he had several worthy recipients for the newly built motor. Between the three of us, we coordinated John Lane to pick up the motor from John V.'s place, so it could be received by a 240 in decent enough shape to build a fun car.

John Lane dropped off the radar for some times. From what he told me, he was going through some serious personal life stuff. Being the community member I am (and quite the nice guy, really), I gave him some space to figure things out. I finally losing my patience, and wanted to get the ball rolling again.

I contacted John Lane again to get the status and regroup for the next steps.. I came to find out that John Lane was no longer in possession of my motor. I contacted John V. to find out what he knew about it, to his surprise, he thought that John Lane had worked something out with me to sell my motor to another member, Al K. John Lane drive my motor and my T5 transmission, and turbo down to California, from Washington State, to deliver and sell my motor to Al K. at a profit..

No fault of Al K., of course. In his own words:

"Hey there Brian,

Ooof, I had a bit of a not so sure feeling about this whole motor deal. Lane would never give me any answers about where it came from, etc. and he kinda muscled the deal by showing up here in town. To tell you the truth I can't even remember if it was a year ago or two, I am leaning towards two. Also sorry, but I have no record of the sale, it was cash. It included a cossie turbo( which seemed to be soaked in a bucket for a long time), and T5 trans (which turned out to be totally shredded inside, ) For god's sake I hope my wife doesn't find out about this, but I think it was closer to $4K that I paid.

Here is a link to the hooptie, still a work in progress.

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Alfalfa-Rally-Sports/138471189558902

Good luck dealing with the John and John circus, I will send Lane an email, for what its worth."

To this day John Lane does not "recall" driving my engine down to California, selling my engine, and when I ask about John Lane about the money, he denies that he owes me anything and gets very hostile.. Little does he know that John V. has been on three-way calling several times.

John Lane: I want my money. You have my address, send me a check for $4800 which is what I originally paid John V. for the parts -- and we can call it even. I can't believe I have to address this matter, in this way, to a grown man twice my age.

Just in case you forgot John Lane, because you forget a lot, you HAVE my address. The amount is $4800.

To remind you John Lane, I was a cook at the time I purchased the motor and was planning to do this project.. so not making a lot of money, this was a huge deal for me.

Thank you Al K. and John V. for being supportive in my efforts to recover the funds.

Hello,

I'm a current college student looking to transition from the pavement pounding I'm used to into running on gravel, snow and various other surfaces. I've been doing autocross racing for 8 years now and after visiting the 100 acre wood rally I'm seriously looking into setting up a Volvo for stage rally.

Granted I run a Mitsubishi on the pavement I'm quite familiar with the Volvo chassis, having spent most of my childhood riding in them and currently using a 91 244 as a daily driver. As soon as I'm sure the old car will survive I'm planning on taking it to run rally cross events to gain seat time. So for now I'm here to learn and seek advice on car set up and the general background comings and goings associated with a rally event.

I have enjoyed watching rally events since I learned that they existed back in middle school, so I'm really looking forward to graduate and start making money to set up a car to sling gravel with.

Quote
john vanlandingham
Oh. wait.nevermind. I'm tired I wasn't thinking. I've been called all sorts of shit altely because I think people don't have scads of money to throw away for shit.... but it is clear the organsiers and Federation want rich people.

:-(

I thought about leaving this alone, but thought it was worth commenting on.

FWIW John, I don't think ANY of the shit you've received - ever - is because anyone has an issue with you supplying budget parts and helping people to see a more affordable path to enjoying rally and enjoying it longer. In fact, I'd suggest most people here are more than happy to point people in your direction for fabrication services with only a few caveats - none of which are 'deal breakers'

With a few exceptions, any shit you receive is well earned. In some cases, the shit you receive wouldn't be called shit by most normal people and certainly wouldn't be called shit compared to what you regularly throw out, often as the first volley.

If we look at it honestly I don't think you can blame either the organisers or federations for people wanting to spend more on this hobby than you think they should. That goes to everything from driving a blue Subaru to buying split collars for $26 for a pair and a spare instead of sourcing, or making, a custom fabbed option.

So if it's not clear, and it seems it isn't... thanks, John, for being a good source of information and affordable parts for the rally community. While I won't always agree with what you say or how you say it, your voice and dedication to the sport is a valuable part of the spectrum of opinions in the community.

My good friend Andre Steere wrote something in our epic :The next big thing that;s going save US Rally this in respone to Danster from Scotlands description of the club structure in Scotland and tat other country below them, Pommieland or Angleterre or whatever it is.
This thread was started with tongue firmly planted in cheek. So it's kind of a catchall of ideas, good, bad, sarcastic, etc.

John Vanlandingham has been screaming "Local clubs!!! Look at what's successful somewhere else and copy it!" for the 15 or so years I've known him. Canuckistan does have more local motorsports clubs than we do here in "'Merica! Fuck yeah!", land of super sized everything.

I mentioned I had become dimly aware years ago and even worked together with a young journalist on a couple of magazine "features" on the differences between the US, where the competition was thin and not a lot of racing, and Sweden where Swedish Championship events were considered harder to win than World Championship events

Anyway just so you guys can have a laugh and say Jeeezuz, the fawker hasn't changed his tune in 35 years, but it does apply to us'n cause rally is organsied the same way,

Anyway hope they're legible..(There some things edited for the US readership, din't want to talk too much about working under the table, no taxes, being illegal etc)
Good read.
For any of you that paid attention to Pikes Peak this year this was at the forefront of discussion, especially in the Time Attack class.
Dave could give you more details, but basically, the rule book has a qualifying rule. I think it says something like within 10 or 15% of fastest class time.
This was first year that it was put into place. Had they actually used it, something like 3 people of the 25 or whatever would have qualified.
So Friday night, right before the big Fan Fest thing downtown, they decided on a new rule that excuded 5-10 drivers. Then a few of these drivers that shouldn't have qualified were put back in as organizer selections, which basically boiled down to drivers that had generated some press or had a lot of twitter followers or ??? There were some pissed off people. Caswell didn't qualify and apparently went to the bar and proceeded to rial up his twittersphere of followers. There were other drivers that OWN companies that provide monetary support in form of sponsorship dollars that didn't qualify. In the end, they changed their mind, let everyone run, the day ran late, ended up gettting shortened, some people ended up having to compete in snow, etc. It was a clusterfuck.

Remember the old seeding system of the SCCA. Where you actually had to do something impressive to move up to higher seeds to qualify for competing in the national championship.
Maybe a qualifying system is REALLY what US rallying needs.

It was suggested that I introduce myself, and it seemed liek more fun than the rest of my plans for the afternoon.

Hi, I'm Andrew Buerckner
I'm a Gemini and I like long walks on the beach...... Hang on that's not right. :)

I'be been rallying since '04 started as a nav and service crew. I drive now and still regularly Nav/service offical etc I'm sure you know what it's like.
I've now got 2 rallycars, one 1600cc FWD Charade which I built myself with help from mates
see here for more details (I tried to attach a pic but i don't have any smaller than 256kb WTF?)
http://www.bmsc.com.au/forums/bmsc-members-rides/25597-charade-4-door-rally-car.html
essentially a light(ish) FWD car with a fairly mild 75kw ATW, LSD, quick powersteering and a very stiff chassis.

Trying to sell it as I also own this MX-5 Turbo.

really early video, and I've attached a pic of me over "The Mineshaft" in Canberra. It's a pretty famous bit of road and you really don't want to jump any higher than this, certainly a brown pants moment!

roughly 180RWKW 6 speed, full spool, very nice suspension and it's not you're average escort/datsun/subi etc. Top fun to drive

Last year(my first full season driving) I won State 2wd, State Clubman, State Novice driver.
This year I rolled it at about ~150KPH (just under 100mph) and made a mess of it.
Best part.... I didn't own it till after the first roll!:eyeroll:

Anyhoo that's a bit about me.

Max Attack Mountain West Regional Rally Championship:
3-4 event regional championship rally series. Mountain West is composed of all states west of and including the Rocky Mountains. Each local series has a single major event. Olympus (PNW), Idaho (Utah/Idaho, North CA/NV), Prescott (CRS), and Colorado (Front Range, 2014 and beyond).

Each competitor has to define a home event and must enter their home event, enter a minimum of two events, and attend the championship finale to qualify for the championship.
$10,000 prize purse is goal.
Two types of points.
Seed points for starting an event.
Finishing points for 1-10 position at each event.

Payouts:
At finale, 40% of purse ($4000) will be distributed evenly to all entered teams.
An additional 20% ($2000) will be distributed to all teams with 2-3 seed points prior to the finale
Remaining 40% ($4000) will be distributed to top 5 teams for championship based on cumulative points.
1 - 40% - $1600
2 - 25% - $1000
3 - 20% - $800
4 - 10% - $400
5 - 5% - $200

Additional funds raised for prize purse will be split with 50% of funds being divided between all competitors and 50% going toward top 5 purse.

Example:
20 drivers
8 drivers with 2+ seed points.

All 20 drivers get $4,000 / 20 = $200
8 seed 2 drivers get $2000 / 8 = $250
1st place + $1600
2nd place + $1000
3rd place + $800
4th place + $400
5th place + $200

No Coast Motorsports will provide video production for the complete series which will be broadcast as Youtube webisodes and delivered to each organizer and any other interested parties for submission to local public broadcast channels. No Coast will deliver the production to the local Denver channel.

Now to figure out who to talk to for each event... :)

RJ Russell Jacoby dijo.

I posted this on SS the other day, but since it's the result of actual research, it's worth putting up here too. In a world where you can read unsubstantiated press releases about growth for years on end, I think it's important to actually see what's really happening.

This is number of rally entries by cars in the US, covering all rallies/rallysprints, by anyone, anywhere in the US. As you can see, 2011 is half of what 2002 was. The scale is linear and starts at zero. The absolute Y scale is trivia, the trend line is what's important.

If you want to compare everything to 2002, here's what it looks like:

2011 51%
2010 55%
2009 57%
2008 60%
2007 73%
2006 67%
2005 73%
2004 84%
2003 81%
2002 100%
2001 93%
2000 73%

Now you know... so go do something about it!
