Interior pictures/ideas

Hello Boys and Girls.

I'm making a new thread 'cause best I could tell (with a quick parooze of this sites search and google) there isnt too much info on how/what to do with the various crap behind the dash.

I Just tore my dash out today, and while I am sure I could make some set up that would work, There has to be plenty of tried and [s]cheap[/s] true ideas on what should go where.

Also, Al, Would you be kind enough to post of a pic of your Volvo's interior, If you have one handy?

Jari, I too was not aware. You're awesome.

I have a different queestion to add to all this as well:

Do you guys use any of the stock body harness? Or rewire the whole car yourselves?

Ive been just pairing down the stock harness, and once I am healthy, I am going to attack the jungle behind the dash area and try to get the fuses in a central position. Ill have to cut into 2 or 3 bundles that are 3 inches thick, and I am worried its just going to turn into a quagmire. I am not sure yet what angle to take on this...

In BMW i used mainly the stock harness, stereo, airbag etc removed, as said, many times it helps a lot when you can find scheme of the harness if it happens that you need to locate the electric fault..
For extralights, fan etc i used Hella relays which have fuse attached, easy solution...
Many times if you start wiring the car yourself (not always), the outcome is heavier than original, same goes with dash, i´d guess the e36 dash weighs apprx 5lbs airbag removed...

I think William's thread had linked to this one, which has a heater core that you run coolant through.
The one Sean linked to is self contained with an electric heating element I believe. And is $75 more expensive. Simple if it just needs power.

I don't like it exactly, just seems simple, and cheap.

For Deriks M3 we are using a 4" bilge fan to blow through a water to air intercooler, except have hot water plumbed in instead of cold. Seems to be about the same cost to do that, then you end up with something alluminum, strong, and small for packaging.

Heres a shot of the interior in the SAAB 99. We made the dash itself from fiberglass (using a mold made of MDF) and painted flat black. The foward section below the windshield is glued down craft felt.
The panel insets are aluminum and held in with D ring style 1/4 fasteners for tool-less access to connectors behind... also all relays and fuses are accessible to the co-driver strapped in.
I meant to ask about where your switches were, Thats pretty cool too, although I think Id rather have em up on the console.
The yellow lines are painted hard lines? Okay, pretty cool.
Kris- That looks excellent, really squared away. The doors have some fabric snapped on eh? I think I will steal that idea. And I really dig the reflective tape, thats smart.
I see the whole center console was fabbed, is that the fuse block in the lower right corner?
What is supporting your steering column?
What are the yellow wires running under the sill bar on the drivers side, tailights/etc?

Same fabric for the doors, had my mom sew them up with reflective tape used from fire-fighter uniforms. Satisfies the door covering rule, no sharp edges, is light and easy to remove.

Primary fuse block is the square thing under the kill switch. The console mounted to the exhaust tunnel is a switch panel for the fans, heater, lights, etc. I think it actually has integrated fuses as well. All marine stuff from Blue Sea (they make good quality stuff, better than 'racing' crap you get from Longacre, etc.)

Steering column is supported by factory mount point, which is welded to the dash bar... We actually put a steering quickener in place of the stock column.

Yellow lines are the brake and fuel lines. I actually should consider covering them somehow incase they break from impact... just to keep the stuff from spraying everywhere.

In our Colt the dash was yanked and two cross bars welded in. Covered the bars in sheet of metal then cut holes for gauges and such. Previous owner had rewired the fuse box to the center console. Liked the extra room in the cab. There was room to install the factory heater box. There wasn't much glare. Sorry about picture sizem still playing the trying to get downsized.
I still have nitemares over Al's dash. A couple days before his first event the car shows up at my shop with the windshield badly fractured. The dash missing, the heater box laying in the CoDs foot well, wires and bungy cords everywhere. Looked like someone tossed a grenade in a dumpster behind Safeway....
Hey! To be fair at tha point it looked like a grenade had gone off in the dumpster behind Ace hardware. It wasn't until after the rally that it was full of cigi butts and Starburst wrappers.
Luckly, with the 240 it LOOKS like the heater, though huge, would be low enough to clear a dash bar. Dont really know, though.

Here is our setup. Fire resistant cloth, fiberglass rod, velcro. Removable in 2 seconds, soft, light, has given us no troubles.

I'd have liked to have retained the stock heater, but the cage interfered too much with the mounting points. We did run it for a while, but it just couldn't get it to mount properly. Went with an aftermarket heater that throws some serious heat has a bitchin fan. My only complaint is we have defrost only, and at Big White, our feet got awful cold after a while (especially when wet).

Coulda sworn I had a photo of the heater setup, but I guess not... Can kinda see it in the above photo.

I don't like dashes, but I don't like exposed crap. We went best of both worlds (IMHO).
