VW 8v cams

what cams are VW guys running? more specifically 8v cams. are they worth it on a mostly stock motor?

my thought being gain a little more power and top end, something the ABA lacks, but at what cost? im afraid of going too big and losing midrange and ending up with a shitty power band that isnt practical for rally, or going with a smaller cam and finding there is no significant difference is power. or am i just being a wanker and should just stick with the stock cam???

The hard part is finding something on the right throttle bore spread. I made an intake around one of those Ford throttles and they are a lot tighter than a DCOE. Most of 'em are only 40mm too unless you find a 460. I HAVE two Chevy LT1 throttles (48mmx2) and they are even tighter center-center, like practically siamesed.

Makes things difficult if you want to use a manifold you already have in your hands instead of mucking around trying to make something.

It appears that a Toyota 1MZ-FE (V6 found in some Camrys, '99-up) has a double throttle on 90mm centers like a DCOE but I haven't had one off yet to measure throttle blades. Looks like this:

..but then fucking around has to be done to seal an airbox to that, and I'm lazy.

But laziness is why I went with injection on the Mazda. So everything is still up in the air.

Yep, and between that (about what I'd been figuring for MS), a wiring harness, throttle bodies, and all of the other minor stuff that manages to add up, it's about a wash.

Quote

Or you can gut hydraulic lifters ( get a hunk of wood , take the lifter and slam it down hard on the wood and the hydraulic dealie will eventually fall out) and mod them so you can use lash caps. or something UNDER.

That's what the link is - lash caps that fit where the lash adjuster normally goes, and the price for ten is about half what discs for the stock solids go for...

Where would I find these? I have a Engle cam (from a circle tracker friend) that i want to put in my budget banger aba jetta hillclimber :-D Its an interesting one if anyone wants to take a look at it ... da-254. Its got a narrow lobe center (108) and a fair bit of lift (.475"). I used it in my street going gti for a bit and man did it liven that up, specially seat of the pants torque... but only to about 6500 when it fell flat on its face (which i guess could have been several other issues with that car).

How I made my VW 2.0 slow a bit more fun to drive.
Advancing Cam sprocket one tooth on timing belt made a huge difference, more power on bottom end didnt affect top end, but would still run out of power @ 5000 rpm. Cam Degs. are measured @ the crankshaft, 1 tooth on VW cam sprocket is 8 deg. on the crankshaft.
Only advance one tooth on cam sprocket or get an adjustable cam sprocket.
Next thing we did was add a cold air scoop, on this 96 Jetta there is a small grill under the bumper on the air box side of the car, we removed the grill & moved horn.
Made a scoop that would fit in that opening & used a flex hose & hooked it up to the air box.
The power gain was incredible & keeps pulling past 6000rpm.
Engine is stock before the mods. After installing the Ram Air System. `Iv'e been running this for over three years, rain or shine hasn't give me a bit of trouble.

The 9As were not fitted to the Golf mk2s in the UK. But they were fitted to early Passats (before they got the ABF), and Corrados (which never got the ABF).
The 9A I just stripped is a 1992 as marked in the casting on the block.

Some 16v Audi 80s basically got the same 2.0 engine fitted to them with codes 6A, ACE. I have only ever found forged cranks in them, possibly Audi price premium warranting higher spec components. These longitudinally mounted engines are easily converted to transverse fitment with a few component swaps, eg. sump and oil pickup pipe, oil filter housing etc.

Was that because it was an ABF and they didn't have experience with it or was it otherwise tweaked? The reason I'm asking is because the Lemons car another guy and I built back in 2009 had no problems with their chip.

We got the shell and a GTI transmission for free, no motor. We found a working ABA for $40 and then I went junkyard diving and got the ECU out of a 93 Jetta. We didn't have enough budget left to put in new lifters or springs or anything so we just got the 268 and a chip from Techtonics and a cheap Chinese header off Ebay. The thing ran great through a couple of Lemonses until the main crank pulley broke off. Had head crash and had to put on a spare head.

BTW, if you chisel the piston head smooth, ABA's will run just fine with divots in them, in case anyone's wondering. Bent valves, not so much.

But now the question arises as to what head to bolt on to the block....should I go all modern and use a 16valve with the extra weight and cost, or should I rock the oldskool 8 valve vibe with a modern twist and use these bits.

I don't think I've seen a 9A here with a forged crank. The main difference between variants here seems to be whether or not the block has oil squirters.

Bang for the buck, for an ABA I'd just get a TT 268 or 276, order their chip to match, and find a better exhaust manifold. Should be less than $400 for all that and it'll wake it right up. It won't be a ripsnorting R2-killer or anything, but it'll definitely be more fun to drive. Neither of my rallycars has that combo, but we did that for a Lemons car and it worked fine.

If it is a late 9A engine it may have the 051 103 373 D head that was used on the ABF (but 9A had a lamer inlet cam fitted).
That head has a slightly better as cast finish and chamber shape with 27mm exhaust valves rather than the 28mm used on earlier types.
The 9A being a short block 2.0 does not have the internal trigger wheel for the ecu like the ABF has which can fail when it gives up the ghost after sustained high rpm.
The 9A has have been found to come with either a forged or cast crank, seems to just depend what was lying around when they were built at the factory.

Our ABF had Digi-3 from the factory. It worked great with the stock cams but reacted very poorly to cams --- and chip tuning with TT was a huge pain.

I have run CIS-e on 2.0l 16v motors with great success so long as you understand what to touch and what NOT to touch.

Currently, we are running Autronic SM4 because I am buddies with Franz Diebold and he was interested in helping to get it running on this --- even de-pinned the factory ECU connector and re-pinned an Autronic connector so we retained the full factory wiring harness. This allowed us to have switchable maps so we can run pump gas or 100 octane if we don't feel like buying race gas or run out and need to refuel in BFE.

That really smoothed out the powerband and the butt dyno numbers were good . The chip is cam specific and I was running it with a stock cam but it was still a major improvement. I finally got TT 268 cam and its sitting on my bench right now. The dyno number's that BFI posted on vortex looked promising, take it or leave it. I've heard good things from a local chump car team running a similar setup. I'm really looking forward to running it but I have a feeling I'm going to end up moving to a more aggressive cam at some point.
my reasons for running an 8v, the car came with one. im not fast enough to need the extra power yet. and yes cost. ABA's are simple and cheap. theyre a dime a dozen compared to 16v's around here which are all in the hands of whortexers who think theyre worth a fortune, even when the valves are bent. also with the motronic ABA throw a spare coil in the trunk incase it rains and call it good.
Both are capable enough and have their pros and cons.
If the OP is running Motoronic he is going to toil to make it run properly with a BIG cam. Plus most cams that big would be solid lifter types so need a tappet conversion. The cam base circles vary between hydro and solid tappet so more work to fit a solid tappet cam to a hydro head.
I understand that even with standard size inlet valves in both heads (39.5mm crossflow versus 40mm counterflow) the crossflow flows more.
Plus if on carbs with a crossflow they are not sitting above the exhaust manifold boiling the fuel off with the fire hazard it creates. I hated stopping at the end of a stage for times with my 8v knowing the exhaust must have been cherry red. :hot:

Those are for complete engines, with accessories (power steering, alt).
Any engine cover is going to be more money. case sutudy: I had to buy timing belt covers for the 16V. they don't exist aftermarket like the 8v, no junkyards had them. $180 for everything from the stealership. Remember, special equals $$. And for someone to even think about rallying a VW they have to be either cheap/poor, or "special".
Valves are the same per valve, but there's just half as many. Timing belts are cheaper, accessorie belts are cheaper.

Small chamber, big valve heads are easy to find. Anything after '87 I think is the large valve (gti or not). Mill that sucker down and drop in a thin HG and call it good. You can even run the hyrdraulic lifters if you feel like never adjusting walves. There are also about a bazzillion more 8v then 16v as well. I have never seen a 16V in a junkyard.

Personally I can't unner-stand why in this day anybody would bother with 8v when there's 25 years of 16v laying around and getting scrapped .
VW chamber isn't as minty fresh slide off the bar stool, oh baby oh baby bitchin as some 16v heads but it is a fawkavalot better than 8v...

Power is ultimately limited by valve area, and the area of 2 x 32mm intakes in about 27% more than MY one big 44.5mm intake...How much bigger than the biggest 8v intake valve?

Only problem is 2 cams to buy and 16 springs...

You could also make the argument that power isn't everything in 2wd. Cheap($100) 8v are abundant.
CIS and CIS-E are very simple fuel injection systems. The only thing that fails are the fuel pumps, and as you say John, we should all be running two.

OK, but to make a 8v have any poop you have to find small chamber-big valve 8v
Also, don't be harsh to 2nd gear. They are kind of fragile.

When you lose second gear and then have to try to climb Brockway, you'll be under three grand for what feels like FOREVER!

:)

I had a "street" car that had an ABA block with an old 8V head...made damn good power, but still no top end to match the 16v.

The last 16v I looked at that was running, was about $350. The parts are also drastically cheaper as well.
CIS and CIS-E are very simple fuel injection systems. The only thing that fails are the fuel pumps, and as you say John, we should all be running two.
