I was between a Merkur and Volvo. The Volvo had the bonus of being always the same and really not needing much cosmetically other than single round bulbs and a nice spoiler and two doors only. The Merkweird needed rear dual window cut and replaced with a single one, whale tail, Euro grill and headlights and a new front bumper (thanks Sean for coming up with the Jetta bumper replacement!!!)
I went with Merkur because a car showed up for $750. Part of me still always wishes I'd gone Volvo. I like a nice long 242 throwing roosters. They are seldom found around here though. $1k or so E36 BMWs on the other hand...
I wouldn't mind getting a 242 someday and I do still keep my eye open for one. I also want a Hyabusa powered Starlet and a rock racer Merkur.

Well when you lift the boot up and see 40mm chrome tube under the boot, buy the whole strut assembly and disassemble it at home--if it's cheap enough--like $25 a side.. Then, at home, you can saw thru the thin outer lower tube and take it apart so you can send the insert away and re-valve it to what I tell you. Then you get a nice new chrome-moly lower tube..with threads cut in and spring seats....
No way around sending some money but especially the fronts---which is all about control--you gotta have good matched stuff. Rear we can wing it a bit, just not overly stiff.

I dunno. I have friends who has one of those C-Max Energi things, and they love it. Most of their driving is a 12 mile commute, so they barely use any gas, and it only adds $10 a month to their electric bill. He said it was something like 100mpg equivalent when you figure the math for both gas and electric costs.

I had a Prius rental once. It drove like a Maytag. Totally boring. But 5 gallons of gas for 200 miles with the thing floored ALL. THE. TIME. was nice. I struggle to get 22 out of anything I own (be it Merkur, Sienna, or Legacy).

I doubt if there were as many Volvos in the whole country rallied in the last 20 or 30 years as there were rotary Mazdas at one event back in the 80-s. Forget the 510s, Colts, Arrows, VWs, Audis, GHL Omni and Daytona cars, Corolla/Celica and even BMWs. My memory ain't that bad. They never were significant in the US. They never spoke performance. Clogs, hairy legged wimmin, tow trucks, green shit growing on the window channels those are the memories Volvos evoke. And now that they are decades out of production you somehow see the second coming. They are dieing daily now, being crushed even faster. The steel was good, the concept ok, the car passable but no one ever laid awake at night wishing to find one under the Xmas tree. No on ever had a poster of one next to Farah on the wall. Mean Billy Jean couldn't even spell Volvo. Daisy Duke thought a Volvo was what she sat on...Hell even the Ford Granada had better popularity.

But hey, maybe Betamax will make it after all and between the huge 240 rally aftermarket and your video collection you'll have the last laff. :bounce:

In the grand scheme of things, buying a donor 325i for $1000 and leaving the motor in (I's not smrt enough to do this) or picking up a sub $2000 M3 engine (prices have fallen quite a bit since I started in 2009) isn't outside the realm of what a ralliest should be able to swing if they're going to do more than one event. Considering no matter what you start with, you're into a rally build for a minimum of $5-7k for build expenses, this notion that a BMW has to have thousands in XYZ is just flat out absurd. Embrace the fact that the BMW is the new volvo/merkur for anyone outside of an area that has no rust. Yes there are people who've spent extra to get higher spec stuff...someone will ALWAYS spend more than "you" so that's not something to hold against BMWs...can't imagine that yellow car setting top 5 times cost less than $10k.

Besides...when you're done with a volvo build, it still looks like an old volvo...but I supposed that's still better than a merkur. :spin:
Wrong Gene. You are mistaking the "I saw-ed it on the Inner-net"...or
because you personally saw it recently---it counts more than better some time ago.

You are also mistaken that "we are faster now"--you've said that many times but I am not convinced---

When there was the most British--Higgins Higgins Lovell and whoever in the $32k per event buy-your-ride Subies--This car was consistently close close behind:

usually 4th or 5th and very close in time.
And he did that for years..but unless you assemble results from here and there---you'd never know how many people were doing overall against the "National" class. History is written by the arse-lickers for the victors.

25 -years ago, Bo Skovronek was quicker than anybody is the whole continent except maybe 2 guys: Millen and Buffum..240.

Careful Gene, that might be something that could be arranged...brouh ha! ha!

More and more are being built. Just flipped another guy from a Bring more wampum build to a 240---he called on suspension seeing all the yackity yack but after a couple of hours talking about the weak points---which since he works at an independant BMW and Volvo place he was aware of ---just not how ultimately limiting they were---he said "Gee you 'spose I should just do a 240...I have 2 of 'em"

2 days later a follow up to say, "Traded a scruffy-ass FWD POS Volvo 850 to a guy for a nice 5 speed 240, lets get cracking!"

That was easy!

moving forward slowly.

Had a bit of good luck, at the p'n'p they were baffled and amused when I hauled up the whole tail of the donor car, (both full quarter panels and the trunk.) They asked "what is that, a pickup bed?" I says "how much is a pickup bed?" "$144" "Yup, thats what it is"

way cheaper that two quarter pannels at $169 a piece and a trunk at $95...

then they threw in the roof for free because they were laughing at me so hard carrying it over my head across the yard...
