Bullshit hype
December 13, 2007 01:11PM
So, just was looking at some pics of Ken Blocks latest rally snow jump. Then I went back and watched the actual full original Stunt Junkies video where he jumps the car 171 feet and they claim it to be world record and furthest anyone has jumped a rally car before. Which, we all know to be false and that record currently belongs to Freddy Loix at around 210 feet in Portugal if I recall correctly. Regardless, people regularily jump further than 170 feet on Ouninpohja in Finland with Markko Martin having the record at 57 meters, which is 187 feet.

Then we have Lisa Klassen. First she become CRS champion or WSRC or whatever by entering a Group 2 car in Group 5 where there aren't any competitors. Then more recently she takes on Pike's Peak with the hype of 'trying to become the fastest woman on Pike's Peak ever' (no fucking chance of beating Michelle Mouton's time) and also wins the Rim of the World glorified rallysprint and makes the claim to being the 'first woman to win a rally in the US.' So do we disregard that Michelle Mouton won Pike's Peak, which, while not a stage rally, is at least a real fucking road and has had rally cars on it every year pretty much and been part of the national rally championship a few years. You should have heard some of the Colorado girls' disgust at the trampy photo cards Lisa was handing out at Pike's Peak this year. But hey, got her a paid ride with Kaaz to do drift so I suppose it worked.

Tell us how you really feel, Grant. winking smiley

While the rally community is generally smart (have to be if the average Joe is going to make his rally dream a reality these days), the rest of society in this country is basically mindless sheep too lazy to be bothered with investigating any claim.

Get it any way you can, I guess...

Grant Bullshit or not she has a ride and we sit here with thumbs up our butts.

Fifty cents in a bet says that if I were to make same to similar claims that it would not fly; pardon the pun.

No need to even consider that. Jamie Thomas (PGT WRX wagon) won Treeline in 2005 overall, beating Blake Yoon (Open WRX) by nearly a minute. Lisa Klassen was in that event, finishing 16th O/A, 3rd Gp5 and 6th CRS Open2WD. So apparently she doesn't have a very good memory. In any case she should do better research before making a claim like that because Jamie wasn't even the first woman to win a rally overall in the USA. Janice Damitio won the Divisional Runoffs in Paris Texas in 1995 (with Leslie Suddard finishing second overall.) I'm not even sure that was the first time a woman won a rally overall in the U.S., but I think it might be.

Oh by the way, as I just coincidentally mentioned in another post on another forum, don't forget the greatest quote ever uttered by any rally driver. Michele Mouton at the top of the hill after winning Pikes Peak. Mind you 'Pikes Peak is Unser Mountain' as they say and the good old boys were not at all happy about being beat by a woman. So Michele Mouton says,(close if not exact quote) "If you guys had any real balls you'd race back down this mountain!"

OK John. You're the most winningest 2WD driver in US history.
You own the fastest Volvo rally 240 in the world.
You hold the record for 2WD on every stage of every rally in the Pacific Northwest.
No, if we can just get a picture of you with a string bikini on bending over the front of your car. Ah fuck. Well there goes your million dollar ride.

She also got her license taken away and wasn't allowed by the organizers to drive the car to the start line after she ripped through the service area spraying everyone she could with gravel. The upper part of Pike's Peak (past Devil's Playground) would probably be faster. I fell asleep one time in the Audi on our way back down during tire testing and was woken up from the g forces of going through the fast on camber corner known as bottomless pit at about 80-85 mph. Did I mention that I'm the first champion codriver of Pike's Peak Open?

Oops, I almost forgot. Shannon Smith won Doo Wop 2 and Doo Wop 3 overall in 1989. Maybe some others. Lisa is not even close to being the first. Maybe the first woman to win a rally overall in 2007 in California. Maybe that's what she meant...

Hey now, there were a total of 2 competitors (including lisa) who met the criteria for the g5 wsrc thing. Its just the other guy only did 2 of the 7 events and lisa went to them all.

And if I've learned anything from rally in the US its that winning a towing championship is just as important as winning a rally championship.

She is not the only hype!
There have been "National Champions" crowned in the USA eventhough regional guys were putting 5mins + on em at most rallies...

rally gods would turn in their graves if they ever knew Lada's were now part of EU rallying!!!

Shannon also won my first rally in 1989 taking 1 min out of me on each stage sad smiley

That was the Coachman Stages in April 1989. Fun seeing Rod Millen cutting tires for her in the service park.

Shannon was very nice and taught me a few things at the event.

Grant, I agree with you to a certain extent, but give her a break. She tries hard and though some of the 'marketing' that her and Leon engage in is rather annoying, she keeps at it and keeps coming back for more, with even more enthusiasm.

I definitely find myself echoing some of your sentiments from time to time (since I'm exposed to it regularly in the CRS), but then again she has a pretty impressive sponsor list.
