Hey guys,
I've got a buddy that's looking to build a volvo 240 rally car. I'm wondering if anyone knows of a FIA kit cage for these old cars. So far I've looked at: Sparco OMP Safety Devices Custom Cages UK I was surprised that none of these companies make anything for a 240 with how popular the car is in Europe, & now that these cars are eligible for historic class rallying. Thanks for the help! |

I know a place but the cost is up there a bit---much much better of course than any of those places, but gotta add on airfrieght.. Now I have supplied lots of these in the past going back to oh 1991..FIA spec with a 44mm main and 40mm fronts part way back then...But its been 8-9 years since I checked what airfrieght inbvound would be.. Before it averaged about $130/cage---but those cages were not the "For cars homologated on 1 Jan 07 and later" things that everybody decided everything has to be in North America. I know at least 2 other 240 that need cages. The ideal thing would for us to go talk reason with some local guys and convince 'em to bend up three cages for a realistic price......bang bang bang... I can check with my source if you'd like.. John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember! sent a note to Swedish contacts, lets see what they say, maybe full kits, FIA spec...
Only concern is that they are literate and can read the FIA rules and our guys here have always been dogmatic and obstructionists then get angry and vindictive...the issue is that FIA cage requires 45 x 2.5mm MAIN HOOP The other forward elements can be--and have been since forever---40 x 2 That IS the FIA requirement for rally, rallycross, racing etc. Hasn't been a problem in the past---many cages have been delivered.....but some discreet inquires ---preceded with quotes and copy and paste from FIA Art 253---ought to be made. And I know its a dangerous thing to do but I was brave and I looked at NASA Cage rules...40 x 2 for the parts of the cages over there that are 40 x 2 is fine..
Now one of youse Canajians can check CARS. Wawwy Amewica--somebody else check their rules so we know.. John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember! Pacific Standard Time is 3 hours behind Eastern Standard Time. |

I don't think it is that simple. But what do I know. I googled the RA rules and it appears they will recognize a "253-8" compliant cage and the 1.75 x .095 is only required when you use the 'alternate' material. DOM. Also, I think they do allow 1.5 on some bars on the cage, only requiring 1.75 on the main and lateral hoops, as well as one of the door bars. So, if you brought in a euro cage that met 253-8 'for new homologations' (their words) I'd think you'd be ok. |

0..... FIA as applied in several rules sets mandates---since 1991----1.75" aka 45* x .095 aka 2.5** Main rollbar (Drawings 253-1 and 253-3) or Lateral rollbars and Rear transverse member (Drawing 253-2 That is Main Hoop and the "east-west" top windshield bar.. Nobody knows really from one day to the next what any Wawwy Amewica rule is but I have seen it insisted upon that they interpret that nice clear English to mean "Main hoop and half laterals and upper windshield bar" No other country reads it that way, and cage builders I have spoken with said---and I translate "politely" "The fucking morons at SBF sent some stupid note saying 45mm for "everything and so we yelled at them it would make it very difficult to get the correct fit and they need to get somebody with brains to teach the idiots to read...They then called FIA and sent a newbulletin saying half laterals same as always 38mm or 40mm--we do 40mm" Of course when the decision makers only refer to their own ideas and cannot even concieve of asking anybody else and are unable to read even English correctly we can't expect they would think of checking with other more experienced Federations.. long and short would be log-book the cars in NASA or CARS, . *-----1.75" is actually 44.5mm, not 45mm **----0.095" is actually 2.41mm not 2.5mm Obviously they're not so picky.
