Well my plan was to sell my open class subaru (which is pending) and I was gonna just spend my time, strip down a car, cage it, keep it simple simple simple. Spend time making it strong, really good safety equipment etc. Now with the rapidly changing rules I realize no matter how slowly I build this thing the real expensive bits; cage, seats, belts, HANS etc would all be have to be purchased basically at once because the real prick of a scrutineer we have in Ontario won't logbook a car without ALL the safety stuff installed, not just the cage. So for now I'm thinking fuck it. I need money outa the current car to buy the house we want so keeping it's outa the question. So I give up.Fuck rally, I'm going golfing.

Nothing is going to be grandfathered in, in Canada anyways. By 2009 seats, belts, HANS, cage will be to current FIA spec. I'm all for improved safety, I support the changes happening BUT adding up the costs of everything is more than I'm going to be able to sell my current car which is REAL open class minus the dogbox.

I personally think that seats and belts are a tech issue more than logbooking. Because the stuff can easily changed or outdated. The mounting is of a bigger concern. RA wants the seats and belts in so I need those requirements met.
I would think that being clever could benefit you here. Build the cage, borrow some seats and belts, get the logbook . Return the seats and belts with a sixpak and get on with building your car. Scrutineers are a necessary evil, but not necessarily evil ![]() The sanctioning body rules have to be followed but there are some ways to ease the process. Gene |
Hey Dave,
Very sorry to hear you down in the dumps on this. With the house, your sale of the present car is no question. The real question is what to do in the future. A cage to the FIA Article 253 specs is not a huge change up from what you had to build before before so I hope that is not a big stopper. FIA belts are good for 5 years and G-Force is still selling the ones for about $170 USD per set, which is the best cost per year around, better than cheaper SFI ones in fact. FIA seats are not inexpensive, so I sympathize on that; we just bought a pair of Sparco Evo's and they were pricey. CARS requiring the FIA H&N restraint is the big expense that I cannot understand; but, since that is not part of the car and therefore not logbooked, your anal techie can't hold the car's logbook issuance for that. I hope that once you get by the house deal and things settle out, you will look at things again. And keep in mind that NASA Rallysport got formed when the SCCA situation got so bad several years ago. Regards, and hope you stick with us! Mark B. |

She just needs snuggles David.
Damn them kids and such. They rate ahead of racecars damned near every time. Give her lots of snuggles. I'll bet that you will do well to rub her feet and shoulders too. So much for the rallycar for now!! JohnLane Overkill is consistently more fun |

Gawd you guys should smack me when I post like a whiney bitch instead of giving me good advice. (thanks mark and gene!) Rally is like Hotel California; you can check out but you can never leave. I'm not giving up. I'm gonna try harder. I have no right to complain when my wife and I make the kind of money we do. Yeah so maybe I have to sell the car I have but there will be another.

Keep your chin up old boy.
At least you can sell your money pit, mine's sitting in the garage minus motor and tranny. Everyone who see's it thinks it looks cool, but without being able to hop in, turn the key and pitch it sideways on the way out of the driveway... the coolness factor is somewhat limited for me. It's been 14 months now it's been sitting... like I said, at least you can sell yours ! So stop being such a whiney biooootch ! |

Buy a house first before going rallying. Don't listen to those telling you to go rally; they won't put a roof over your head or food in your belly. If you or someone in your family becomes seriously ill, you might regret not owning your own home. Later you can go rally if you have the time, money, or sponsorship. Good luck. |

The smart move is not to buy a house until prices decline about another 15% or more depending on where you live.

Do not try to find the bottom or peak of the market. It is not so easy to pick out the extremes of the market cycles. If a house looks like a good deal today act today unless you are only going to live there for less then a year... and that would be silly rent in that case.
Speaking of silly - rally rules are too silly right now so me no play at this time. Derek In the long run reality always wins. |

We might be buying a townhouse for a good price. Which unfortunately means the rally car gets a 6 month break on major purchases till the wedding is over and paid for. But who'm I kidding - I've got 6 months of welding and fab work to do - New seats don't look quite right unless mounted in a car ![]() -Jason |
