But with a approx 25% reduction in fuel economy, a 11 gallon tank and full throttle turbo fueling It isnt possible to make a the minimum loop. Perhaps with a 15gallon cell, but then I would have to install a cell. Yes I haven't actually TRIED at a rally and I probably wont because running out of fuel sucks. PLUS then I would have to actually DRIVE in a rally instead of talk about them on the Internets. Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 09/05/2008 07:22AM by MattJohnston. |

but subies have a plethora of junkpile cars to choose from, you can get anything (stock) off NASIOC used at a 75% discount....high end aftermarket stuff used at a 25-50% discount.
I dunno, I guess at Gorman (my firt time co-driving, 2nd real stage rally attended), all the cars I saw having all the issues were the older, POS cars that someone turned into a rally car 8-10 years ago. granted, they weren't master fabricators, but as the saying goes, you gotta pay to play. Keith came in 5th overall, BEAT on his car (05 suby), and the alignment still drove straight after 12 stages. although, the volvo's were doing well too ![]() ______________________________ ANYway, I just hope the Hockers and Gibaults keep at it a few more years, they seem to be keeping it alive in Cali. I hope they're training their replacements or something... Jon Burke - KI6LSW Blog: http://psgrallywrx.blogspot.com/ |

That's because there is no shortage of wankers out there trying to build 500whp drag cars out of what was built to be a proud rally car. Gotta love poseurs and the sheep that do whatever the tuner magazines tell them is cool! This is one of the things I like about the GVR4. Since it's basically a 4-door DSM, the more expensive bits are all over the place. Anything GVR4-specific could probably be had by having one of those friendly, six hour phone conversations with the man in Sleazattle. ![]() Jon Burke Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > although, the volvo's were doing well too That's because they're forking tanks. Aside from biodegradable wire harnesses and some convoluted vacuum line routing, they're about as advanced as a lawn mower. I think the simplicity plays a major role in their durability. there's like 2-3 straight cut dog boxes (new or barely used) and 2-3 sti tranny's for sale on NASIOC now, its like a fire sale....gotta love the wankers

Back on subject (sort of), what do you more experienced rallyistas think about my idea of Navy Seals/Fight Club-style rally after hours? Not so much looking to win over the hearts and minds of everyone on the idea, but not looking to actively put this together any time soon, either. For now, a purely hypothetical question. If you were going to get some people together to engage in shenanigans such as these (unsanctioned, likely illegal, middle-of-the-night, underground "shakedown" sessions), how would go about doing it? Keep the number pf participants to a minimum? Require radios? Basically, if you were to do something like this, what would you need to see in order to even consider such a thing? Fair enough, and it is always true that pricing is relative. What's a fire sale, I see stock trannies for about 3 grand up there? Really I wasn't trying to knock Subies robustness, all rally cars break stuff, I was referring to the cost of upkeep. I don't have data so perhaps I'm wrong, this belief is going on intuition.
An 8-10 year old car is in the POS department? You mean 18 to 20 right? ![]() IMO age really means little in rally other than in regards to availability of parts. The wear items of any car will be replaced with new parts or rebuilt parts regularly. I'm talking moving parts, bushings, bearings, ball joints, struts, stub axles, CVs, etc etc. And the bigger bits remain structurally sound on a car that has been driven on the street. |

Brand new T5 close ratio dog box rated to 600 hp can be had for Volvo or Merkur application for $2500 brand new. Used ones I've seen as low as $1200.
The fight club style rally would be fun until something happened and then the question quickly becomes who to sue and gives rally the black eye that drag racing has thanks to street racing. It's an attractive, but very bad idea. Grant Hughes |

What I'd need to see would be some other sucker to be the putative "organizer", because when someone is hurt or killed he'd the one sued within an inch of his life. If you want to rebel-rally, don't be the guy who starts one. Dick |

for sure, suby stuff is definitely more expensive depending on what and from whom....those dog boxes are PPG, there are cheaper options. its funny how many people on nasioc spend a ton of cash on stuff like that and will never REALLY need it.
anyway.....'rebel rally'...yeah, really you just need a 'no-fault' waiver and a venue...like the desert....that's really your only option. unfortunately I just don't think its realistic....'the old days' are gone, and so are their roads. Jon Burke - KI6LSW Blog: http://psgrallywrx.blogspot.com/ |
