Snow tires question
September 26, 2008 05:50PM
Do regular street snow tires (Blizzaks) work as well in mud as in snow? Or are they at least better than regular non-mud rally tires in the mud?

Nope. blizzaks get clogged in deep snow, they're best on cleared icy roads. Add some cuts to your rally tires to open them up some for mud.

Yep...like better than an all-season.

I agree. Not even close. Got Blizzacks on mine now. It's no where near as good in the mud as a rally tire, and not much better than a regular all season-radial tire or even BFG with the aggressive directional tread pattern for that matter.

They look like they would be better in the mud than a regular tire but they're really not much if any better in actuality.

You need paddles on yer tires for mud mang. Big chunky deep tread blocks.

The snow tires just have lots of little teenie cuts in them so they're better on cold wet and icy roads.

The hakkapolitas are good in the snow. Heck, I forget your original question. You weren't even askin bout snow tires, you were asking bout mud tires.

Thanks all! I just saw in a store by my place they had 4 15" blizzaks for sale for $50 a piece and thought it may be worth it for whenever I finally can run Rally Colorado. (Since RC has some really bipolar weather that weekend each year!) smiling smiley

God yes, RC has the craziest weather. It's one of those "bring every kind of tire you've got" events. I haven't been there when it's snowed, but in 2007 it certainly got muddy.

Silverstone has some mud rally tires. I haven't used them, but I understand they're popular with the rallycrossers in the PNW, who frequently run in a muddy field.

Which blizzak? There are several designs.
Some are more open, but none are ultimate mudders.

DOOOOoooodz, gravel tires need to squirm to heat up and they gotta heat up to get grippy.

They ain't gonna heat up much in mud.
Failing heating up there's only the void and squareness of the blocks.

Snow tires will work for grip better but die from side wall failure and still effectiveness depends on the voids---the gap and the sharpness of the blocks.

It's really a quandry.
For playing Rally-Ex, snows would be better than gravel tires..

The Pommies have lots of Grass track events and you can look at Colways site for the things that work good there: usually old Michelin "Nora" pattern, non reinforced sidewalls.

Muddy stages? Michelin "Nora" with reinforced sidewalls.

Hey Kevin (err, John?) Colway went bust a year or so ago. There is another Brit company called Maxxsport who seems to be filling in the gaps for the grasstrack boys, no decent website that I've been able to find but they sell through DT.

No more 165/70/10 "true" gravel tyres anymore though sad smiley

I'm going to have to make do with Hakka pattern snows unless someone starts making them again before I finish the Mini.

No More Colway Tyres

STATEMENT BY FRED HENDERSON
I confirm with some sadness that rumours regarding the closing of C-Tyres Ltd., manufacturers of Colway Tyres, are not without substance. However, I need to make my own position clear, as many people have never understood my relationship with Colway Tyres. Colway Tyres was formed in 1966. In 1982, as my own driving career was coming to a close, I approached Colway Tyres to produce remould tyres for motor sport. They took to this wholeheartedly and the concept was immediately so successful that they asked me to independently handle marketing throughout the world. At this point, Colway Motorsport was formed under the umbrella of Fred Henderson Ltd., my main company. Colway Motorsport continued to be run by myself until the end of 2005, when other back in-house at the main factory. Dedicated staff were appointed and - since that time - I have helped and advised them.

At no time since 1982 have I had any financial involvement with the running of the main factory, although the success of the Colway Motorsport business and the way in which we worked with the factory did lead some people to believe - wrongly - that I owned everything. The present situation has arisen out of the blue and I am doing my utmost to get sufficient tyres released for next month's Lombard Rally. Having spoken to numerous people, I have every hope that this will happen. I will be working for nothing, but I feel a tremendous moral obligation to ensure that everyone on that rally has tyres.

As explained above, however, I am well outside the inner circle, so I can only ask and hope that everything gets done.
For further information about Colway Motorsport tyres only, please contact:
Fred Henderson
Tel: 0191 384 6319
Please note that Fred Henderson is unable to comment or offer any advice about the closure of C-Tyres Ltd.
Statement issued on Monday 29 October 2007.

So far I've found:

Yokohama A031 is a good mud tire.

for comparison A034 is for Snow.
and A035 is for Gravel.

^^^^^^^^Thats the first picture^^^^^
Mud tire is supposed to sling and clear mud. So the tread blocks can grab a new fresh bite each time. Snow tires try and hold the snow in to use to stick to the new snow that the tire is grabbing against.

The Second picture shows tires from MAXXSPORT.
Are either of these the NORA or Colbert or whatever the same of the company that went out of business was??

It depends. If it's hard and dusty, snows last about 10 runs. If it's muddy, you need to hock a testicle and hunt down some old Bridgestones.

The G001 look like great mud tires but they're sized for a truck. 185/85/16
